“Relax, Jo. Today is Tuesday. I called in yesterday and have as much time as I need. What about you?”
Jonah dismissed his concern with a wave.
“I’m sure Robyn called in for me. My employer is very understanding about my... condition. By the way, how did we get here the other day? I don’t remember much.”
“I needed to lay you down in the back seat, so I drove your car. I’m going to need a ride when it’s time to go home.”
“Not a problem. Until then, would you like to take a look around and meet some of my friends?”
RJ smiled so hard his dimples came out.
“I’d love to, Jo. I’m really curious about this place.”

ROBYN DRUMMED IMPATIENTfingers on the desktop, waiting for a confirmation email from the Duluth staff. Even if they discovered a problem or wanted to make changes, they were more than capable of dealing with it. At long last, the message arrived.
“Looks good, Robyn. Watch your back and say hello to Jonah for us!”
She shut down the system, locked up all the files, cleared the break room of anything that might spoil, and gathered up the trash. Next came a thorough sweep of the building, an adjustment of the environmental controls, and a sign for the front door explaining the temporary closure. With everything now secured, Robyn grabbed her purse and headed towards the main entrance.
She discovered a human male standing just inside the front door. His scent and fast heartbeat told her something was off with the guy before he even spoke. He appeared to be somewhere in his thirties, tall, burly and wearing a ball cap and dark glasses.
“All alone today, Missy?”
Robyn’s wolf growled a warning in her head.
“I’m sorry, Jonah is out today, and I’m ready to close up shop. If you have a quick question, perhaps I can answer it.”
He looked her up and down slowly.
“You one of them nudists down to the Preserve? Always wanted to meet one of ya. Yer kinda pretty, even with yer clothes on.”
Robyn stiffened. This wasn’t a customer. It must be one of the troublemakers, but why here in town? Were there more waiting outside? Robyn chose her words carefully and gave him her “don’t-mess-with-me” face.
“I haven’t time to answer rude questions. You need to leave, NOW.”
The man laughed, stepping right up in her personal space.
“Yer a mite frisky there, girlie. I like dat. What say we have a little fun before ya go on home, eh?”
Robyn backed up a step and pointed to the door.
“Get out of here, unless you want me to call the authorities!”
The man cackled, lunging forward to trap her against the counter.
“I ain’t a go’in nowhere till I get what I come fer. You ain’t one of them lesbians is ya? No matter, I got sumthin you gonna like.”
Done playing nice, Robyn braced herself, unsure what he might do.
With a lecherous grin, he reached out to grab her breast, hissing in pain when her hand shot out with inhuman speed to lock onto his wrist like a vice. Eyes wide, the fool decided to press his luck and try for a kiss. Robyn reacted with both speed and force, kneeing him in the balls. Even as he groaned in pain, she backhanded him with such power he hit the floor and slid across the entryway. Enraged, he shook it off, staggered to his feet, and came back for more.
“Yer gonna pay fer that ya little bitch!”
Robyn used her superior strength to bash him across the jaw with a lightning-fast strike, crunching bone and splattering both of them with his blood. He sank to his knees in shock, just long enough for Robyn’s swift kick to the head. The man crumpled to the floor in a heap, unconscious and no longer a threat.
System swimming with adrenaline, Robyn paused to get her breathing under control. Ben warned all of them not to reveal themselves, but what could she do? Let him rape her? Not. Happening. At least the bastard hadn’t brought anyone else with him, as even shifters can be overwhelmed in numbers. With one eye on her assailant, she reached for the phone with a bloody hand.
