We’d eaten my mother’s cake last, and my stomach was full. As I accepted the gifts from my husband’s family, I froze. This was all too real. The previous day, I’d stayed late at my desk to finish a report, and now I was wearing a diamond on my finger.
Benny packed up the small gifts in a bag and then returned to me. “Are you ready to head home now?”
My heart beat fast. This was too much. As we headed to the door, I said, “Sure, but we need to talk.”
We waved goodbye to everyone and escaped as fast as we could. The door closed, and he asked, “About…?”
I marched forward like a soldier. “We went too fast earlier. We need to cool it down.”
He placed his hand on my lower back, and waves of desire rushed into my veins as he asked, “Did I hurt you?”
I shook my head. “No. But I’d like for us to slow down.”
He dropped his hands but stayed next to me. “Why?”
I crossed my arms. “Because I don’t trust you… or us… to last.”
We made it to his driveway, and he took out his keys. “So you don’t want to share my bed?”
I was reminded that I was staying at his place. I swallowed. “No. I’ll take a guest room tonight.”
He waited for me to cross the threshold and then said, “I don’t like this separation.”
I turned around. The day had been too much. I reached out and brushed his arm. “We need to be friends first. Passion fades, and then there is nothing.”
I swallowed and walked in. Though I hadn’t even toured the house earlier, I found the light and flipped it on. Behind me, I heard him lock the door and say, “I fucked up in the past.”
Too easy a summary.I glanced at him. “It’s more than that.”
He directed me to a side room and opened the door. “I’ll respect your wishes, but I’m going to win your heart.”
I held the door handle like it was now a weapon and said, “Good night.”
He stared at me, and my lips tingled. I thought he would kiss me, but he just nodded and said, “I’ll knock with your bag in a minute, but I’ll see you in the morning for breakfast. Operation Win My Wife has begun.”
Fuck me.If that was his plan, I wasn’t sure I had the stamina. I wasn’t strong, despite how I sounded or acted. The girl who saw him as the hero who’d walked her home from school still existed. When I was near him, it was like I hadn’t grown up.
I closed the door, but I didn’t know how I would stop myself if he truly went full throttle for my heart.
