“Ha, ha. Very funny.” Grumbling under my breath, I kept up my attempt to dislodge River. “I’ve barely eaten anything today so that must be the reason for the dizziness. Nothing a

few burgers and a handful of desserts can’t fix.”

Alex was already nodding and pulling his phone out of the back pocket of his jeans. Dejectedly, I watched my escape for the night die a sudden death when the alpha ordered a ton of food to be brought up to my room. Any chance of getting plastered went down the drain with it unless I could convince Sissily to go get a few bottles as she earlier suggested. My gaze narrowed on my friend’s face, and she returned the favor already reading my expression that I was contemplating something.

In all the scrutiny I was giving my friend, River’s hand slipped under my tank top from the wiggling I was doing turning me into a stone statue when I became as stiff as a board. “For Hecate’s sake Blackman, you are like a damn octopus. Keep those tentacles to yourself would ya?”

He took mercy on me and released me finally with a maddening smirk on his face. Sissily didn’t help matters with the couple of snorts she was trying her best to cover up with a cough. Even Alex was hiding a grin by rubbing a hand over his mouth.

“I’m glad I can amuse all of you.” Twisting my lips to show my displeasure, I plopped onto the mattress and blew at the strand of hair that fell over my face. That’s when this whole thing took a turn toward a clusterfuck of epic proportions.

“River?” came a soft feminine voice from the open door of my room.

You could hear a pin drop.

We all turned to find a rather attractive blonde with big emerald eyes smiling shyly at Blackman. A sharp pain speared me in the center of the chest that I pretended I didn’t notice, and I forced my mouth to stretch into a smile while glancing at my friend. Sissily shook her head sharply to tell me I probably looked hideous, so I dropped the expression immediately.

“I’m sorry, I didn’t know you were busy.” The pretty blonde blinked at River so seductively even I wanted to go shove my tongue down her throat. “I’ll see you later.” She turned to leave but as always, I was a glutton for punishment.

Everyone kept their mouth shut, even River. Did I do that as well, you ask?

No.

Have you met me? Of course, I wanted to make him feel as awful as I felt. If I had to suffer, so should he, the insufferable bastard!

“Who’s your friend, River?” My chirpy tone made Sissily groan as if in pain.

“I think I’m developing a headache too.” My bestie told the alpha who was rubbing his temples and shaking his head at Blackman.

“What?” My innocent question didn’t fool anyone, not even me, and it made a muscle spasm in River’s jaw.

Seriously. Sometimes you just can’t win against people.

Lesson number 18:Everything is fair in love and war, unless you are a witch. It’s like a train wreck; you are cringing but can’t force yourself to look away.

I butchered the hell out of everything, and obviously I butchered any chances of love coming my way, too.

CHAPTER2

“Idon’t understand why I can’t ask a simple question without it turning into a pack drama.” I told Sissily as I stuffed a handful of fries in my mouth. “Isf wuf ouf of pofuftnes.” My chipmunk cheeks puffed out as I tried to talk with a mouthful before swallowing the food half chewed in my urgency to argue my case. “It was out of politeness.” I repeated in case she misunderstood my food filled sentence earlier as I wiped the grease from my mouth with the back of my hand.

According to Alex and Sissily, I was being an ass and making River’s life miserable. To which I disagreed wholeheartedly. “I can be polite you know. What?” She was about to roll her eyes I could feel it, but my glare made her think better of it. “I can.”

“You?” Sissily leaned back and looked at me up and down before nodding thoughtfully. “You can totally be polite and very nice.” My smile full of gratitude was as premature as Mike’s ejaculation according to the stories my bestie had told me. “You just chose to be rude.”

Well, she wasn’t wrong about that. I did choose to be rude, but I had my reasons for that, damn it.

“Anywhoooo,” picking the pickle out of my burger I slapped it on the plate with disgust. A shiver ran up and down my spine as I fished between the buns for more of the yucky things. “I wasn’t trying to be rude or mean. I was honestly curious about who the bombshell was. Weren’t you?”

The mumble coming out of my bestie was the buzzing of a mosquito and it abruptly cut off when my hand froze with my fingers in the burger up to the second knuckle and my eyes narrowed dangerously on her face.

“I’m sorry, what?” It was so unusual to watch Sissily squirm that I almost dropped the burger in my lap.

“I said,” on a deep exhale, she deflated like a balloon looking all dejected and shit. “I’ve seen him talking to her a few times while you were recovering from the last blood loss. I was hoping to avoid you seeing it though.”

“Why?” recovering my food I took I huge bite and chewed thoughtfully while watching her like a hawk. “You think I care who River talks to?” Genuinely puzzled, I finally asked when I swallowed the bite.

“You don’t?” Sissily challenged with one eyebrow arrowed up.
