I blinked at him lazily.
“I will release the Nephilim and the witch if you do one more test.” He changed tactics. I should’ve negotiated from the beginning.
“You let them go, and I’ll think about it.” Something else occurred to me, and I sat up. “Who betrayed Alex? You said you bought the loyalty of his pack.”
“That’s what you care to know?” Cocking his head to the side, he watched me as if I was the unknown creature in the forest.
“Yes. If you tell me that and release my friends, I’ll do your stupid test.”
Leviathan studied me for so long I thought he would tell me to get lost and unleash a bunch of demons on my arrogant and rude ass. Instead, he started chuckling, and after he was done laughing at me, he watched me with a proud grin.
“It was one of the she wolves that warms River Blackman’s bed that was easy to buy. All I needed was for her to pour the potion which would lure the Mazzikin to pack lands and protect them from being exorcised. That way I knew they would bring you to me.”
Danika’s voice sounded in my head‘What you are looking for is looking for you.’
Not once did she say that ever since this craziness started. My grandmother knows more than she tells, and her lies need to come to an end eventually. I also wanted to laugh that River is getting laid and I’m the one paying the price. I bet it was that blonde that barged into my room who betrayed Alex. At least now I knew to tell Sissily to warn him after I convinced Leviathan to let them leave the Underworld. I couldn’t even be angry at River. Good for him and all the orgasms he received.
He’s not dumb like me.
“So, do we have a deal?” I asked the demon watching him steadily.
“I have a better proposition.”
“Of course, you do.” I drawled and jumped when a twig cracked behind me.
I shouldn’t have worried because Sissily with River draped over her stepped into the clearing where I was still on the ground in the bed of leaves.
“Now that everyone is here,” Leviathan smiled smugly. “I will tell you the task.”
“I can’t wait.” Rubbing my face, I shook my head. There was no winning with the cursed demon. He was going to have the last say no matter what.
“There are two doors.” He started and I groaned so long and loud he glared daggers at me.
“I told you no more doors.” I snapped.
“These are different.” With a patience of a saint, I took a breath and smoothed his unbuttoned shirt. “There are two doors and two guardians of them.”
Two horned demons stepped out of the shadows resembling minotaur’s just as two doors popped into existence. Sissily hurried to join me and kneeled next to me on the forest floor dragging River with her. She took my hand and squeezed reassuringly without saying a word. I had to swallow a lump.
“You can ask only one question. And they can give only one answer each. One of them always tells the truth, the other one always tells a lie.” Triumph is written all over Leviathan’s face. “If you guess which door is the exit to your world, all three of you can leave. If you guess the wrong one, the two of them will immediately die and you will stay here until you give birth to your first child conceived with me.”
“I beg your fucking pardon?” Outraged, I stared daggers at him. “This is your way of telling me you want to screw me. Get the fuck out of here you pervert.”
“That’s my offer. Take it or leave it.” With a shrug he folded his arms across his chest and watched me unblinking.
“Don’t do it, Hazel.” Sissily whispered digging her nails into my hand. “We can pass the trials no matter what he throws at us.”
Leviathan watched me as if frozen in place, and my heart stopped for a few beats before hammering against my ribs.
“Give me your word.” I told him through a fist tightening my throat.
“Hazel…” River rasped, and I had to look at him.
You are almost out of time River. I can’t live with myself if you get stuck here.” His eyes bore into mine, but I was almost out of courage. I had to do this. “By the way your fuck buddy betrayed Alex. You should tell him that when you see him. Because one way or another, you are leaving the Underworld even if I have to kill Leviathan to get you out.”
“Ask which door leads to our home and I will cast a spell to discover the correct answer.” Sissily told me, determination loud and clear in her tone.
“Witch magic does not work on the guardians.” Leviathan shrugged unconcerned.
