“Fuck!” I shouted as my head popped out of the water and I sucked in a much-needed breath. “Oh, shit, shit, shit.” Kicking as fast as I could, I dared not think about how the monster was about to take a bite from one of my legs like it’s a drumstick. “There is no meat on me fucker, go away. It’s more like a chicken wing than a turkey leg.” Or it could bite my Hoo-ha too, and I gasped in outrage at the thought of that.
Nasty water filled my mouth while I prattled nonsense, so I promptly clamped it shut. Stabbing my hand in the water and hopefully aiming it at the creature, I sent another attack with whatever my magic found suitable. I was prepared to electrocute myself again to save my vagina.
“Hazel.” Sissily’s voice was a balm to my soul.
Jerking my head up, I whipped it left and right searching for her. Her head was bobbing a few feet away behind me and she had her arm wrapped around River’s chest. I nearly sank under the water from the relief I experienced at seeing them both alive.
“Careful there is an octo-squid below us.” I shouted and started clawing at the water so I could reach them. “I zapped it,” Spitting water out, I continued. “But that only pissed it off, I think.”
“An octo-what?” She coughed but treaded the water toward me too. “Did you hit your head?”
A tentacle burst up between us, flopping angrily before sinking back down. Sissily screamed and reared back trying to stay out of its reach, but I had different plans. Now that I could see my bestie and River, all I wanted was to get us out of here. Leviathan said I needed to prove I was worthy. I was about to give him a show that would turn his hair gray.
“Hold on to your panties girl.” I told Sissily and raised my arm above my head as high as I could, letting magic gather around my fingers. It hissed and spat like an angry cobra from the intensity.
“What are you doing?” Sissily gaped, her eyes became so wide they were going to pop out of her head. “You’ll kill us all.”
“We’ll be fine.” I pushed through clenched teeth.
I had no idea if we were going to be fine, but what choice did we have? Stay in the cursed water and wait for that octo-squid to munch on us? Or float until something else came to kill us before we drowned. Screw that.
“I’m about to turn this ocean or lake into a fish stew before I allow anything that is not a hot guy to eat our vaginas.” I told Sissily firmly and her jaw dropped open as if she thought I had finally lost my mind.
Maybe I did.
With a shrug at her traumatized look, I jabbed my charged arm in the water and released the current of magic that was eager to do as much damage as it could. I hoped it would fry any creature in the water but leave the three of us safe. Unfortunately, River got a seizure at the same time, and his body was jerking and flopping in Sissily’s hold. It lasted for a good minute or two before everything stopped.
Silence stretched between us; Sissily and I were staring at each other with wide eyes.
“Is he alive?” I had to know. I’d never forgive myself if I killed him.
“Umm,” reaching for his throat, she closed her eyes for a second. “Yeah, he still has a pulse.”
“His heart might explode too.” River croaked and my heart skipped a beat. “You trying to kill me, Miss Byrne?”
“Always, Blackman.” I choked out through unshed tears. Sissily was openly sobbing and clinging to him when she saw him awaken.
Any idea where we are?” Blondie asked, looking around in confusion.
“I think I saw a similar door to the one we entered but it was down.” Sissily pointed toward the bottom of the ocean-lake.
“How sure are you?” I eyed her dubiously.
“I’m sure.” She simply said watching me steadily.
“Okay, let’s get out of here but hold onto me like your life depends on it. And don’t let go of Blackman.” In a couple of strokes, I was next to them and Sissily twisted her hand around my shirt. The wet fabric cut into my skin but that was good. I’d be able to notice if she lost her grip.
“I’m ready.” River was preparing weakly to take a breath and hold it.
“Let’s go.” With a sharp intake of breath, I dived in taking both of them with me.
When we were under water, I turned to Sissily, and she pointed in the direction where she saw the door. Jaw clenched, I resisted the urge to go up for air one more time and kicked with everything in me in the direction she pointed. It felt like an eternity that we spent looking for it, and I almost gave up twice, but finally, I saw the door.
It was floating in the middle of the water with nothing to hold it in place. Eager to depart this place, I renewed my efforts, and to my shock, the closer I pushed us to the door, desperately begging the goddess to help me reach it, the further the exit seemed to be. Desperation and fatigue were fighting for supremacy inside me, but it was the loosening of Sissily’s hold on my shirt that fired up my brain to think. Everything in the Underworld so far has been the opposite of what it appeared. And it was all a means to trick me. So, throwing caution to the wind instead of desperately pushing to reach the door, I started pulling away from it. I wanted nothing to do with the cursed door and prayed to be as far away from it as possible.
The door wiggled for a second and it darted at us with an incredible speed. I had no time to process what was happening before it was looming in my face and it sucked us in. We dropped to the stone floor of the chamber we left from, splattering, coughing and dripping water everywhere.
We made it.” Sissily cried flopping on her back and star-fishing it.
