Silky black hair cascaded over his wide shoulders to the middle of his back like a waterfall.
All shiny and smooth it made my fingers twitch in need to touch it and see if it’s as soft as it looked. Long thick lashes were at half-mast hiding most of his impressive eyes that resembled a cobra attempting to mesmerize a prey before it devours it whole. Full, bow-shaped lips stood out stark against his angular face softening his features from intimidating to sensual and alluring.
“It is.” My terse reply had him grinning at me and that was his biggest mistake when it came to me.
Pretty boys piss me right off by default.
“What are you going to do about it, little girl?” he stopped in front of me and leaned forward whispering the question seductively over my mouth, his long hair sliding over his shoulder to tickle the side of my face.
So, I kneed him in the family jewels as hard as I could.
CHAPTER12
Leviathan doubled over; leaving no room for doubt that demon and human alike, a male is a male, and he would bow deeply when you crack his pecker. Whatever demons were left in the chamber scattered away so fast, I almost thought I imagined them being there when he roared in pain and clutched at his groin.
I must admit it was satisfying seeing him on his knees in front of me.
“Hazel, run!” Sissily gave up hiding and jumped out from behind the pedestal waving both arms frantically at me. “Don’t just stand there.” She growled furiously. “I said run damn you.”
My bestie was already yanking on River, sliding his body across the stone floor one painful inch at the time. She was red in the face from putting her back into it, baring her teeth at the skies with each pull.
Shifting into a defensive stance, heart pounding in my chest, I prepared for the attack I hoped was coming. If it didn’t come, I would’ve done something to keep the attention on me and away from Sissily and River. When all this started, I was expecting to have a chat with the archdemon. Thanks to my dumb temper I’d be happy if we walked out of here alive.
Maybe they should put me down like a feral dog.
Leviathan was changing and the shimmering air around him was contouring his kneeling form until it exploded into a towering black dragon with a spiked tail and a head the size of the pickup truck, we used to lure the Mazzikin away from the pack.
My heart skipped a beat but there was nowhere to run for me. His tail sliced through the air, narrowly missing me as I dived for the floor and rolled a few feet. It was a lucky save on my part because I dodged it at the last minute. I had to use my agility and speed to avoid his next strikes, finding openings to land quick blows wherever I could.
Adrenaline surged through me.
Each time I landed a hit, he roared in fury, his dark energy crackling around him and forcing me to take a step back to reassess. It was a dance of death we were doing, and I knew I couldn't afford to make a single mistake. Sissily, always by my side, used her own powers to support me, manipulating the air and fire to create distractions and keep Leviathan off balance.
The woman was something else. If witches had guardian angels, I had no doubt the goddess sent her in my life as one. But even with our combined efforts, the demon's power was overwhelming. He launched a devastating attack I didn’t foresee, and I barely managed to conjure a protective barrier in time. The force of the impact sent me sprawling to the ground, pain shooting through my side as I slid over the stone.
“There is nowhere to run.” Fuming in anger and fisting my hands I glowered at the archdemon aka dragon at that moment and pushed myself up. “Isn’t that right Leviathan?” the dragon roared at my accusations.
“You have finally lost your mind.” Sissily snapped at me after the thundering roar, not giving up on her efforts to assist me. “I didn’t fight to live through all the crazy just to be killed in some shithole in the middle of Hell because you act like a two-year-old. Fuck my life!” throwing both hands in the air she turned her anger on me. “Apologize to him at once.”
Sissily's words had an immediate effect, and I felt a wave of shame wash over me. Even Leviathan was taken by surprise, the dragon’s head swinging her way to better face her. I had let my anger get the better of me and endangered all of us in doing so. If anything happened to them, it would be my fault, no one else’s. Taking a deep breath, I dropped my fists down and stepped forward to lower my head at Leviathan in a gesture of apology.
"I'm sorry," I said, my voice respectful and clear so he could hear me from ten stories up. His dragon was huge. "I should not have provoked you. It was foolish of me. Please, don’t harm my companions, if you want revenge, you can take it out on me."
Leviathan eyed me through a narrowed gaze for a long time no doubt judging how sincere my apology was. I wasn’t sure either about how sorry I was, but I was honest that I didn’t want him taking it out on Sissily or River. After a while, the dragon grunted and the air around him shimmered again as he returned to his human form. His gaze met mine for a few seconds before his lips twitched slightly and he stepped forward. “You have guts kid," he said quietly, an odd hint of respect in his voice that I didn’t expect from him. "But don't think your apology changes anything. Now, you owe me debt."
His arrogance made me angry again, so I clenched my hands into fists, and I glared at him defiantly. Apparently, he found my temper funny or maybe I played right into his hands because he fully smiled and watched me with renewed interest.
“We started on the wrong foot, as humans would like to say.” He told me conversationally, thankfully ignoring Sissily and River like they were not there. “Don’t you agree?”
A ton of accusations and a few choice words were sitting on the tip of my tongue, but I swallowed them down and smiled tightly at him. Reminding myself that I had nothing to prove to the demon, it caused me for the first time in my life to stay silent. Who cares what Leviathan or any of them think anyway? I should worry about finding out information and getting Sissily and River out of there.
Then it hit me.
I narrowed my eyes on the too nice archdemon, who suddenly went from trying to bite my head off was having a polite conversation with me. He blinked those thick curly eyelashes at me a little too innocently for my liking. Something was off but I had no clue what. My magic pulsed inside me in agreement.
“Maybe we can just say we are all sorry and we can go home.” Sissily muttered from the side while Leviathan and I were having a staring match.
He totally ignored her like she hadn’t spoken.
