“WEwill climb.” Char saddled closer to me so she could step on my toes. My eyes crossed from the sharp pain and I bit my tongue to stop myself from screeching. “They were sent after me so I’ll lure them away and no one will get hurt.”
I decided in that moment that I must be cursed.
There was no other explanation why I had to go through all the insanity in my life.
CHAPTER13
“You are the one who insisted on climbing with me.” I told Char for the second time not even pretending that I wasn’t grinning like a fool. Actually, my cheeks hurt from how hard my mouth was stretched. I was moon-bathing my molars, with how wide I was smiling.
“I didn’t plan on showing my good panties to a bunch of drugged up vamps and hyenas when I decided not to let you go alone.” Char huffed, blowing upward a corkscrew of hair that had fallen over her eye. She lifted her face to look up at me. “A, thank you for having my back Char, would do instead of that shit eating grin.”
“Thank you for having my back, Char.” I parroted still smiling when I looked down toward her and almost lost the grip on my rope when I noticed a crowed gathered right under us. “Oh shit.” My hand slipped and I clawed at the rope until I snatched it in a white-knuckled grip.
“See what I mean?” My friend rolled her eyes like I was the one doing something unusual. Why wasn’t she worried? “I think they are not under a spell but pretending. I could’ve sworn that vamp,” she released her rope with one hand so she could twist around. “That one, the one in the red tank top.” Her finger wiggled in the direction she spotted the vampire. “He was gawking up my dress. On purpose.”
“Char, I think we should worry that all of them are right under us and could start climbing to kill us. Not that they can see your lace panties,” I chided and sped up my climb because I wanted to be away from the spelled creatures.
“They’ve been there since we stepped out the window and you hooked our ropes to the roof.” She followed suit, the skirts of her dress swaying bellow her. “If you paid attention you would’ve known.”
“We are almost there.” Stepping to the side, I reached down and offered her a hand.
My toes were gripping the edge of the brick and gave me enough leverage to be able to pull her up. We were almost at the roof where we would flip over and get out of the open, so the sooner we both were at the same height the better.
“Do you think he really was looking at my ass?” She took my hand and pushed as hard as she could to help me bring her higher.
“Why do you care?” Grabbing a hold of the decorative trim and locking my fingers through the holes in it, I hefted myself up and flopped over on the rooftiles. “It is a nice ass. Can you blame him.”
“Thank you, Allie. I think it’s a nice one too.” Her head popped up above the rooftiles. “At least Dimitri has eyes only for you, or I would’ve freaked out that I showed him my flashy globes, too.”
If my eyes opened any wider they would’ve rolled off of my face and off the roof for the hyenas to gnaw on them.
“Oh, how cute.” Char’s husky chortle irked me. “You didn’t see him craning his neck the entire time?”
Sure as hell when I scrambled to lean over and look, my gaze locked on a glowy blue one. He held me locked for a long moment and with a nod he disappeared inside.
“If you’re done making googly eyes I could use a hand.” Char groaned from the attempt to pull herself up.
“Sorry.” My mumbled apology earned me another groan but I did grab her under her arms and yanked with everything in me. She pushed with her toes on the bricks at the same time and we both toppled over backward, Char dropping like a rock on top of me.
“Holy crap you are…” I wheezed and cut off when her head whipped around, long corkscrews flying, and she pinned me with a glare. “Light as a feather.” I finished breathlessly, gasping for air.
“Thanks, it must be all the running for our lives I’ve done lately. It does wonders for your waistline, you should try it.”
“Wonder where all that sass is coming from.” I muttered making her snort. “Watch that tile next to your right foot, it shifts if you put too much pressure on it.”
Char’s phone chirped, so she dove with both hands inside her tote which she obviously brought with her. One of these days I was going to convince her to get me one of them, as well. I had no doubt you could pack a house in it and it won’t feel like you are carrying anything rather than a regular purse. It was a bottomless hole full of useful gadgets that had saved our lives on more than one occasion.
“Dimitri says we are all clear.” But she was frowning at the phone screen too long for my liking before she tucked it away.
“And?”
“And what?”
“What else did he say?”
“Not to leave pack land without him.” Char rolled her eyes. If we kept it up I was pretty sure they would eventually roll off our heads. “I swear sometimes I’m thinking he has never met you, Allie.”
“I’m not that bad.” Was my automatic reply as I started inching down the roof toward the large tree I was hoping would be our salvation. “You know as well as I do that leaving pack lands so these zombified creatures can follow us and not hurt innocents is the right thing to do.”
