“You won’t fit,” Colt shouts from behind me, his arm clamping over my legs as he pulls himself closer. I think he is learning tricks from the human.

“No shit,” I spit out in anger.

Helena’s hair flings up in the air, writhing like standing snakes before her flingers disappear from the edge, and then she is gone. My twin’s hold on me is the only thing keeping me on top of the train when I surge forward to join her.

“I can go.” George is now on top of my legs. Since when did they start using me as a mattress?

Kicking them both off me but mindful not to shove them off the cursed thing, I pull myself forward, passing Beelzebub with only a few grunts from him. Satanael is a problem, however, so I glance around to see how to maneuver around his large frame. Without my groin getting close and personal with his ass, that is.

He cranes his neck and pins me with a glare. “Do not even think about it.”

“I’m going down there.” By my estimation, we should be almost on top of the next station. Time is of the essence.

Wind whips around my head, and the longer strands of my hair stab my eyes. It takes everything in me not to kick them all off this damn thing and go after my mate. What is it that they don’t understand? The more time we spend engaged in this staring match, the longer she is alone dealing with who knows what.

Is Raphael even alive?

“It is her choice, Shadow.” Satanael picks the worst fucking time to lecture me on relationships. “You must trust her.”

“Like you trusted Zadkiel?” My sneer is uncalled for, but I can’t find it in me to care. “How did that end up for you?”

A muscle twitches under his left eye.

“I need to get down.” Maybe if I say it a few times, he will make space for me to crawl closer.

“No.” The prick even spreads his legs, so now I can’t even edge around him.

Fuck.

Dizziness overtakes me, and I drop my forehead on the cold metal, closing my eyes. Nostrils flaring, I take deep breath after deep breath, hoping I don’t toss my cookies all over both of us. Well, all of us actually, with the wind streaking down the length of the train. Emotions flood me—helplessness, fear, regret …

It should’ve never come to this.

After Purgatory and all that bullshit, Helena should be safe. We need to rebuild whatever is left of the city and take a breather, for fuck’s sake, not repeat what went on before I had to kill my mate. Try as I may, I will never be able to erase or escape that memory. It’ll haunt me for as long as I live, even with Helena by my side. And her own father wants me to stand back and watch her plunge into the first danger that comes her way.

No can do.

“She knows what she is doing,” Beelzebub growls from behind me, but he doesn’t help.

Propping myself on my elbows, I glance down at him. “Does she? She saw Raphael die for her. Plus … it’s Helena.”

Beelzebub grins, and he can’t hide the affection he has for her from me.

“Is he alive?” I hear myself ask, and I clamp my mouth shut.

“Yes,” Satanael answers, proving he pays too close attention for someone who trusts his daughter’s decisions. “He must be.” His mutter is for himself, but the wind carries his words to my ears regardless.

“Let me pass, Satanael.” My throat is raw from shouting.

“And have her mad at me because you want to kill yourself to prove a point?” One of his eyebrows arches, and it’s so much like Helena that I can’t breathe. “No.”

I wouldc already be down there with her by now if these assholes would stop being more stubborn than mules. The scraping of my teeth as I grind them together makes me shiver, but no matter what I say or do, there is no getting around Satanael. I’ll have to wait like an idiot until he jumps so I can line up with the broken window I saw him pointing at before my mate made the crazy decision to go through it.

“Station.” Beelzebub jerks a hand, pointing at the bright light peaking from around the corner.

This is my chance. It was risky to follow her while passing through the tunnels, but while it opens wide at the terminal, I will safely jump down and through the shattered glass. There will be enough room to fit my body, and these idiots will be out of my way, too. Heart drumming, I coil up, ready to pounce at the first chance.

“Jump,” I order my twin and the human sternly over my shoulder before turning my full focus on the incoming station.
