My dad watches Luther leave. “Does he seem a little off to you?”

I shrug. “Maybe he’s worried about Jessie?”

Dad shakes his head. “She seemed fine when I saw her.”

“At the grad party?” I ask. “That was like four days ago.”

“Huh? Oh, right.”

Speaking of acting off. “Are you okay?”

He sighs. “I think I need pizza.”

I laugh. “Oh, is that the diagnosis?”

Dad nods. “Want to stay and finish these here?” He lifts his drink. “Or should we do an early dinner on the couch in our pajamas?”

“Definitely option two.”

Kendra

Papi: Are you home?

I pickmy phone up off my desk.

Me: Yes.

Papi: I’ll be there in ten.

Me: Okay.

I set my phone back down.

I haven’t spoken to Luther since the coffee shop yesterday. And I just feel… uneasy.

Jittery.

We need to talk. I know we do.

And as much as I know it has to be done, I amnotlooking forward to telling my dad about us.

Sitting on the front steps, she looks perfect.
