“Don’t be an ass, jerk face.”
“Oh, I know who you are now. The FedEx man’s kid.”
“You know the reason Mom and Dad had me? Because they couldn’t accept anything less than perfection.” I groaned, and Sami’s laughter boomed in my ear.
“How long have you been holding onto that one, sis?”
“They just come to me. What can I say?”
“Yeah, ‘cause you are funny. Funny looking anyway.”
“Alright, I’m done. Now tell me about my nephew, Reed.”
I laughed. “Well, I see you’ve talked to our dad already this morning.”
“Yeah, yeah. I know you bought a house, and I want to hear all about it, but not right now. Get to the kid.”
“Speaking of kids. How’s Ally doing?”
“Same, causing trouble. Now quit stalling.”
Humor gone, I leaned against the counter. “I have a son named Ry with a woman that if you told me two days ago she was capable of keeping this type of information from me, I would have called you a liar. Damn it, Sami. He’s twelve.”
“Dad said you’re going to her grandparents’ house today.”
“Yeah. I couldn’t deal with Raven anymore yesterday. I lost my temper, scared her and her little girl. Some first impression on my kid, huh?”
There was enough of a pause that I held the phone out to see if we were still connected before putting it back to my ear.
“You need to hear Raven out, Reed. Let her explain. Don’t forget I’ve been in her shoes.”
Shit, I’d forgotten it hadn’t been that long ago that Speed found out about Ally.
“Speed left, Sami. You went to tell him and he was gone. I’ve been right here.”
“You’ve always been on my side and taken up for me. Yes, when I found out I was pregnant, I went to the Black Hawk’s compound, but I took the easy out and took Kane being gone as an excuse. Instead of turning and walking away that day, I should’ve spoken to the president and told him. They knew where Kane was. I can’t even use the excuse that I didn’t know how MCs worked.”
“Okay, I’ll give you similar situations. But, Sami, another man is raising my kid as his own. Raven allowed it. I want to have a relationship with my son, I’m just not sure how. And that is only part of it. I mean, I know I have to build a relationship with him, but I’m going to have to deal with Raven. I’m not sure I’ll ever forgive her.”
“Reed, you changed after Raven left.”
“I did not!”
“Oh, please. You loved her, she left, and you changed. You went from being devoted to one girl, which for a male raised in an MC is a feat in itself, to a male whore. Let’s be honest, I’m surprised this is the only kid to surface that’s yours.”
“Is this supposed to be a helpful speech because it isn’t.”
“Don’t go getting pissed. I’m not scared of your temper. Seriously, Reed, and I say this with all the sister love in me—get over yourself. It isn’t that your feelings aren’t important, they are, but there is someone else involved in this that deserves to come first, the boy. Hear Raven out and give her a chance to explain. You loved her once. And you might find it easier than you think to forgive her. As far as Ry, just be yourself. The two of you will work it out. You’ve got a good heart, Reed. Ry will see that, too. And if you tell anyone I said that, I’ll have to hurt you.”
“Thanks, sis.”
“Anytime. Call if you need me. I’m not that far away. I’ll always have your back, Reed.”
“I know, Sami.”
“Hey, and if I’m wrong and Raven has turned into a raving bitch—let me know and I’ll bring Carly with me so she can kick Raven’s ass.”
I chuckled. Carly grew up with Sami here at Haven. They were best friends and Carly spent a lot of time at our house to get away from her parents. She was Stone’s daughter. At least then, that was what everyone thought, including Stone. When our dad, Wild Bill, president of Haven wanted Sami someplace safe while we did the final push to clean out the club, Carly was sent with her because Stone, her dad, was the reason for the cleanup. Wild Bill called on a few men who he served with in his time in the military. They just happened to be the officers of Black Hawk MC.
