Sami ended up with Speed, one of the enforcers, and Carly, who vowed never to get tangled up into another club, ended up with Crusher, the current president of Black Hawk. He’d taken the reins when his dad stepped down. The biggest shock to come from what was supposed to be a temporary move wasn’t Ally, Sami’s daughter with Speed. It was that Carly found out she wasn’t Stone’s daughter after all. She was the daughter of one of the Black Hawk originals who was killed by Stone’s treachery. Speed was Cutter’s son, and when it was all said and done, Carly turned out to be Speed’s sister. One thing was for sure, MC life was never boring.
I glanced at the time. “Going to let you go. I want to head to Raven’s.”
“Okay. Don’t forget to keep that temper in check.”
“I will. Love you, brat.”
“Love you, too, jerk.”
No sooner than I hung up with Sami, my cell rang again.
I swiped the screen, then answered, “Hey, Dad. I know you talked with Sami, she called already.”
“Good, but that’s not why I’m calling. Can you swing by the clubhouse before you head to Raven’s?”
“Yeah, what’s going on?”
“Freak’s snake died overnight. He wants to bury it today.”
“Okay, do I need to drop a box off for it or something?”
“No. You need to swing by because he wants to have a funeral.”
“You’re shitting, right?”
“I really wish I was. Just be there, Reed. I’ve still got to call Crank and Moose.”
“I’ll be there.”
“See you in a few.”
After I hung up with my dad and struggled with the fact I was going to the club because we were having a club burial for a snake, I grabbed my keys and walked out. My phone vibrated as I waited in the driveway for the garage door to close. Pulling it out, I read the text.
Moose:Do you think we should grab flowers?
I didn’t bother to reply. I shoved the cell into the pocket inside my vest and started down the driveway.
Every brother in theclub stood in the woods behind the clubhouse and watched one of the oldest members of Haven, Freak, shed tears as his closest friend and club brother, Shock, shoveled the last of the dirt on the box containing his pet rattlesnake. Katie stood on one side of Freak while Charlie stood on the other, both women swiping at the tears in their eyes.
When Shock was finished, we walked back to the clubhouse. Freak in front led by Katie and Charlie.
“If other MCs get wind of this, they’re going to demand our club patch,” Tram said, his voice low so Freak wouldn’t overhear.
“Fuck ‘em. Besides, this was important to Freak, so that makes it important to us.” Even if I thought the ritual was flat out nuts, I’d never do or say anything to hurt Freak’s feelings. None of us would.
“You didn’t answer my text.” Moose moved beside me.
“No, because that was fucked up.”
“Uh, it wasn’t a joke. Katie asked me, and I had no damn clue. When you didn’t answer, she made me stop at the flower shop on the way.”
“What made you choose daisies, Moose,” Crank said from behind Moose and me.
Thank God we’d reached the clubhouse and everyone else had gone inside, leaving only me, Moose, Pinch, Tram, Hawk, Crank, Roach, and my dad.
“It was the only flowers I could remember when Katie made me go in while she took a call from the hospital. I sure as fuck wasn’t going to ask the woman behind the counter what flowers would be best for a snake’s funeral,” Moose responded, and so much for keeping our composure as we laughed due to the ridiculousness of it all.
Roach sober up first. “You know this is probably going to send Freak into a case of depression. We need to keep an eye on him. He and Shock both have shown an enormous change with the additions of Katie and Charlie into the club.”
