“That’s what I like to hear.” He smirks, taking my hand in his. “Let’s go home.”

Home. Our home.

I step into the kitchen, yawning. The smell of bacon and my mother humming catches me off guard.

“‘Morning, Mom,” I rasp. I walk over to her and kiss the top of her head. “What’s all this?”

“I wanted to make you kids some breakfast before Autumn and I take off.” She smiles.

“You didn’t have to do that,” I tell her while dropping a pod into the coffeemaker.

“I know, but as I always say,” she teases.

“Breakfast is the most important meal of the day,” we say in unison, laughing.

“I’m glad you came to visit,” I tell her, sliding onto the stool, sitting at the island.

“Me too, sweetheart.” Mom smiles over her shoulder. “I’ve heard Shane talk about this place for years now, so it was nice seeing everything with my own eyes.”

“I bet.” I take a sip of my coffee.

“You look happy,” she murmurs.

“I am.”

“You know, that’s all a mother ever wants for her children. For them to be happy—”

“Mom,” I cut her off.

She waves me away. “Please, just let me get this out.”

I nod for her to continue.

“All we want is for our kids to be happy. Being here with Shane makes you happy. I know you planned on moving home, but if you don’t want to, that’s okay. Even though you don’t need it, you have my blessing to settle here instead.”

“Thanks, Mom. I was dreading telling you, but this is where I need to be.” I get up and brew another cup of coffee.

“I’m so happy to hear that. I’m glad you found Shane. She’s your soulmate. I can tell. I’ll be sad that you won’t be home, but I’ll come visit often. You’ll come home too. Besides, I’m not getting any younger and would like grandkids someday soon.” She smirks, making me groan.

“I’m going to take Shane some coffee. We will be down soon.” I grab Shane’s and our cups and head toward the stairs.

“Maybe take a shower together and get a head start on those babies,” she teases.

“Mom,” I groan, but smile as I make my way to my woman.

Chapter 8

Shane

“Good morning, Shane.” Nina smiles at me as I come down the stairs, freshly showered.

“‘Morning, Nina.” I smile back.

“Have a nice shower?” She smirks.
