“There was a question mark on the end.”
“I didn’t hear that.”
I really do love him in spite of his ego, which is the size of Texas. “You are a total asshat.”
“But a hot one. Say it.” He nudges me.
“You’re okay.”
“Just okay? I think you can do better than that.” He moves closer to me, the mischievous grin solidly on his lips. “Don’t make me devour you here on the street, sweetheart.”
“Fine. You’re very attractive.” I take a step back, knowing it won’t make a difference.
“Better, but not quite there.”
I try to retreat, but he is faster and grabs me in his arms. He holds me close, and my hands rest on his shoulders. “You’re perfect.”
Sean’s playfulness fades away as his hands snake up my back. “No, you are. You’re perfect for me, and now everyone will see it.”
And then he kisses me, right there in the middle of the street without a care in the world that people are watching.
Chapter Twenty-One
Devney
“God, how can I be so exhausted and still function?” Syd asks as she shuffles out of her office. “I swear, I am so over this postpartum shit.”
“It’s been almost three months.”
“Three months of total crap!” she says as she grabs a folder off my desk. “I’m ready to come back to work and sleep through the night.”
She’s nuts. Most mothers want more time at home, but she’s begging to go back to work. “You know there’s something wrong with you, right?”
“Yes, apparently, I’m missing some part to my brain that says rest and snuggle your baby. Declan points this out daily.” Syd sighs and sinks down next to me. “How is the workload going? Is Troy handling it well?”
Troy is the replacement lawyer who has been filling in on the cases she couldn’t postpone. He’s rarely in the office since he lives almost an hour away, and he seems nice, doesn’t ask for much, and continues to say how much I’m helping.
“He’s doing fine.”
“I saw he won the case against Mr. Dreyfus.”
“I know Mrs. Dreyfus was very happy.”
They are in their late eighties, and about a year ago, she decided she wanted a divorce. It was strange since the Dreyfus’ seemed to be the cutest and happiest couple in Sugarloaf, but apparently, he wasn’t a faithful husband. After his dalliance, and God only knows what exactly he was able to dally, with Mrs. Kutcher, who is also married, Mrs. Dreyfus wanted out. So, she came to Sydney, who tried very hard to get them to reconcile. When that was unsuccessful, Syd handled the divorce case. Mrs. Dreyfus is now happy with Mr. Kutcher.
It was very big drama in Sugarloaf.
“I still feel like I ruined Christmas or the Easter Bunny.”
“Why?”
“Because they were the cute couple who handed out full-size candy bars for Halloween, and she baked cookies for your birthday, and he was the sweet old man who taught damn near the entire town how to change a tire. They were supposed todietogether, not . . . date their neighbor.”
I smile at Syd’s obvious despair. “You did right by Mrs. Dreyfus.”
“What if she marries old man Kutcher? Will we just swap their names? Oh, God.” She tosses her arm over her eyes. “I can’t think about this.”
“It’s disturbing.”
