“And you think not taking your meds might have something to do with this?”

Someone rings the buzzer before Mila can answer.

“Don’t move a muscle – we’re not done here,” I warn her, getting up to see who’s here.

“It’s Ethan. Is Mila with you?”His voice, from the other end of the line.

I glance over at my sister, who vigorously shakes her head.

“What am I supposed to tell him?” I ask her.

Mila shakes her head again.

“We can talk to him about it,” Eric says, suddenly.

“Seriously?” my sister asks, incredulous.

Eric gets up. “If you don’t want to see him, don’t want to talk to him, then you don’t have to.”

Mila looks over at me – I’m as confused as she is by Eric’s reaction. He kneels down beside my sister and speaks to her calmly.

“But you have to tell us if he’s done something to you, whether he’s been disrespectful or…”

“He hasn’t done anything. I’m the one who’s done something.”

“What are you talking about?” I ask, alarmed.

“I think I left him a message last night.”

“What kind of message?” I ask.

“I told him I couldn’t accept his proposal, and…”

“And…?” I encourage, as Ethan continues to ring the buzzer I’m ignoring.

“That I slept with someone else.”

“You what?” I raise my voice, and Eric shoots me a glare. “What’s going on, Mila?”

My sister shrugs. “I don’t know how it happened.”

I already know how this conversation will go. So I sigh, dejected, and open the front door.

“Where are you going?” Mila asks.

“It’s best if I talk to him. You just stay here with Eric, okay?”

Mila gets to her feet, forcing Eric to get up, too.

“I think he’s furious,” she warns.

“Oh, you think?”

“Please, don’t do anything stupid!” I hear her say as I walk down the stairs and towards the door to my building. I open it, and a livid Ethan appears in front of me.

“Tell me where she is.”

“I don’t think you should see her right now. Not while you’re so angry.”
