She shakes her head.
“Then… Why?”
Mila’s eyes brim with tears. “Can you fix this?”
“Mila…”
“Can you take care of it, Sean? Please?”
“Of course.” He hugs her again.
This time, it’s Sean’s eyes which latch onto mine from over his sister’s shoulder.
“I’ll take care of it. I’ll take care of everything. Don’t worry about anything.”
23Sean
Eric has made breakfast for all three of us. Eggs and bacon, which I thankfully had in the fridge, and lots of coffee – something we all need after last night.
Mila still hasn’t told us where she went, but from the confused state we found her in, I reckon she was simply wandering around all night with no particular destination in mind, until she decided to come back to mine.
“Something could’ve happened to you,” I say again.
I can’t always turn a blind eye. Mila has to understand that she can’t just disappear every time things get tough, or decide not to take her medicine whenever she feels like she’s okay.
“I know how to look after myself.”
I sigh. “We spent all night looking everywhere for you.”
Mila sticks her fork into her eggs and studies us both. “Together?”
I lift an eloquent eyebrow. She’s not going to get out of this just by shifting the attention onto me.
“Have you called Ethan, at least?”
She shakes her head and lowers her gaze, staring at her plate.
“You should. He was really worried.”
My sister drops her fork onto the plate and slowly lifts her gaze to meet mine.
“Ethan asked me to marry him.”
“Yeah, he told me last night. Is this why? You ran away because you were scared?”
“I don’t know if I want to do it.”
“Did you tell him that?”
She shakes her head again, letting her eyes drop.
“Maybe I should leave the two of you alone,” Eric says. “This is family stuff.”
“I don’t want to,” Mila says, bringing our attention back to her. “I don’t want to marry him.”
“Do you at least want to be with him?”
“I’m not sure anymore.”
