“Why not?”
“Do you really think you have a right to ask me that?”
“I repeat: I never slept with Robert before you and I broke up.”
“Do you think not fucking him before you dumped me makes you a better person?”
“I was honest with you.”
“You don’t get the point in all this, do you?”
“What I’m seeing, what I’m hearing, is that… You’re still bitter.”
“You think?”
“You’re hurt and I’m sorry you feel that way.”
“But you’re not sorry that you were the one to bring this all on.”
“It just happened. I don’t think I’m to blame. I just fell in lo…”
I point my finger at him. “Don’t you dare say it again.”
Colm sighs and raises his hands in defeat.
“I should never have said it.”
“And you shouldn’t be here right now.”
“You’re right, I should never have come. I just thought…” He shakes his head. “Maybe it’s best if I leave.”
I cross my arms, waiting for his actions to match his words.
“One more thing, though.”
I scoff in irritation.
“Is it serious?”
“Excuse me?”
“Between you and the professor. Is it serious?”
“Sean. His name is Sean.” My tone is hard, annoyed. “And I’m not telling you anything about me and him.”
“I don’t think he’s right for you…”
“Leave, Colm,” I say, cutting across him. He has no right to talk about Sean. “And please, don’t come back.”
Colm nods, then finally goes, leaving me alone with a sense of confusion, of resentment, and my heart still shattered.

SEAN CLIMBS INTO the car. “Hey.”He tries to meet my gaze, but I can’t. Not after what’s just happened. Not after he asked me about us.
“Is everything okay?”
“I’ve had a bad day.”
