Spinning to face me Lyla grits, “She is the killer, right?A female serial killer.Oh, she is fucking smart going on for years without someone noticing anything, but she fucked up now.”

I can only bob my head, knowing she’s right. Her eyes go wide and then she gags, slams a hand over her mouth, and rushes off to the bushes to dry heave.

“You’re working yourself up,” I gently murmur while rubbing her back.“We’re onto her now and will put her behind bars once we find the evidence.”

Lyla jerks away from me and points in the global direction of her car when she snaps, “Check the damn shit she tried to poison me with. The bodies have scrapes on the bones, I bet she uses the meat in her own damn kitchen.Oh yuck, I really hate puking.Thank fuck the baby didn’t like the smell of it.Hey, our kid has damn fine intuition when it comes to sniffing out iffy stuff.”

I step closer and pull her into my arms, needing to hold her close. What she just mentioned could be true.Hell, I don’t even know the name of the woman behind the front desk. How could I be so damn stupid to leave her behind?Who knows what might have happened.

Did the woman really try to poison Lyla?Is that how she subdues her victims and then goes in for the kill?Sounds too damn right if you ask me.

“I’m okay,” Lyla murmurs against my chest, her fists buried in my leather cut to hold me close.

“Good, ’cause I’m not,” I confess and tighten my arms around her.“I won’t leave you again.”

She rises on her tiptoes and nuzzles my neck.“Sweet, but I really like peeing alone. You following me into the bathroom is a bit creepy.Unless you’re helping me pull my hair back when I’m puking.”

A chuckle slips from me, easing some of the tension in my body.“Fine.It’s the only compensation I’m willing to make.”

She pulls back to grin at me and I cup her face to take in her beauty.I’m so damn lucky to call this woman mine.Leaning in, I take her lips and slide my tongue between them to taste her.Feeling her body against mine, exploring her mouth, everything lights up my whole being and grounds me back to the here and now.

This time I’m the one pulling back.“Let’s get my laptop, find a place where we can work in private, and get some work done.I’m going to call Archer and have him send someone to pick up the trash. We have to get it tested. It might be a long shot but if you’re right? We might be able to link it to the body that was found this morning.Flesh was missing from it.”

“Yuck, don’t remind me or I will have to gag some more,” Lyla grumbles and steps back.“Go call Archer.I’m going to check my phone and find somewhere we can work in private.”

We both turn to the screen of our phones and in a few minutes we’re walking back to her car.

“Let’s grab some of my stuff from the room first. We have to wait for someone to come and pick up the trash anyway,” I suggest.

Lyla shakes her head.“No way.I’m not letting the evidence out of my sight.”

No one knows what’s in the trunk, but she has a point.“You’re right.Besides, I don’t think it’ll take ’em long to get here.I mentioned there was meat involved and we didn’t have it refrigerated.”

She leans against the car and a few minutes of silence pass when I move to stand beside her.

Lightly bumping her shoulder, I say, “Your call to Lynn worked wonders.”

Her eyes meet mine.“Yeah?”

“Archer mentioned earlier that she busted everyone’s balls not to mess with us.”I grin.

Lyla giggles.“She’s very happy we’re together. It bugged the fuck out of her she couldn’t succeed in hitching the two of us.Now she’s thrilled we’re having a girl named Moxie Lynne Foley.”

I’m back to pulling her against me and kissing the fuck out of my woman.Damn.Having her voice our daughter’s full name has me hard as a damn rock.

Apparently, we’re oblivious to our surroundings when I hear a familiar voice rumble, “A serial killer is at large and I could have popped you one in the balls while you’re sucking face with your old lady. Not a very smart idea, Pax.Head on the job instead of blowing a nut.”

Taking my time to end the kiss, I turn to Archer.“We made sure to stay with the evidence, which is secure and locked up in the trunk, and got away from the hotel first.”

“So, you have a suspect?”Archer asks.

“The woman behind the front desk. We’re going to check out her background once we hand over the evidence,” Lyla states.

Archer nods and waves Luke and Louie over.“Hand the twins the evidence you’re talking about. They’re going to take it to the lab and make sure they put a rush on it.”

Lyla opens the trunk and hands them the bag.“She made pastry with meat in them. The scent alone made me miserable and then my mind jumped to the possibility of the meat being human.”

“Yuck,” Louie grumbles as he takes the bag, holding it out in front of him as if it’s going to explode all over him any damn second.
