He turned his head, his eyebrow raising.

“Yes, my wife?”

My wolf snarled, snapping her teeth.

I swallowed, feeling my confidence returning. “How do you know, about–” I waved my hand weakly around the short cabin hallway that used to be the elaborate one that led to a master bedroom. “This? The warlock, the wolf, the bite, the–”

“The supernaturals? The world hiding beneath all the human world’s noses?” His smile widened, showing both his fangs.

His normal crisp suit looked cleaner and even more intimidating than ever. His features were sharper, stone-like. Almost as if I could prick my finger on both his jaw and cheekbones. Maybe that was why I feared him more; he wasn’t human. He was unpredictable, and even my wolf couldn’t figure out what he was.

“The conference I went to before you shamelessly left”—he frowned, picking at his nails—“was the beginning of a beautiful partnership with a businessman by the name of Duke Idris.”

Holy Cheez-its.

Chapter Thirty-Eight

Delilah

Mymouthdropped, alongwith every other organ in my body.

“I see you know him. I guess the dog educated you in some ways.”

Shane’s thought he’d won. I could see the smugness in the lines on his face building with each passing breath. Or was he breathing at all?

Can vampires breathe?

He tapped his long fingernail on the door frame, taking a real breath? A fake one? Either way, he sighed and pushed away while Chad approached from behind.

“Make sure she doesn’t do anything stupid, like run away,” Shane said as adjusted his vest underneath his suit. “Not that she would, unless she wants to see her friend in the chair suffer a worse death than he is already experiencing.”

I tightened my hold on the bag, my claws now making their untimely appearance. Shane noticed, taking a deep breath and expelling it through his teeth in a hiss.

Okay, so breathing to smell the air, he does do.

Noted.

“We need to leave sooner rather than later. Seven minutes Delilah.” He took one longing glance toward me.

Chad gestured for me to enter the bathroom, and I heard a low murmuring as I walked in. I knew not to waste time, not when Bram was sitting helplessly in the chair. But I would not waste the few minutes I had alone.

“You better have a good fucking explanation why your heart is racing out of your chest right now.”Hawke’s snarl blasted through my head while the hot water ran down my body.

His come ran down my leg, and I bit my lip not to snort.

If Shane could smell my blood on my hand, I prayed to the goddess he smelled that other part of me, too. Not that he would mentionthat. He was too proper to mention another male’s come.

“Oh, how are you, honey? Did you get all the bad guys?”I cooed.

“Delilah, where the hell are you? Did you go to–”

“The cabin? Yeah, I did, Bram needed help.”

I rubbed my chest, an unexplainable pain radiating from it. I leaned on the shower wall, while using the unscented soap on my body.

Shane was in a mood. A mood that was a precursor to another mood that would be bad news for everyone, including his own men. And now that he was, what? A vampire with unexplainable powers meant hell for all of us, maybe even Hawke.

“I swear to the gods, Delilah, when this is all over, I’m going to spank your ass so red, and fuck you into oblivion. You don’t listen to a damn word I say. I’m trying to protect you and you go walking in there without a care, do you have any idea–”
