I don't know what the fuck he did or how he did it, but he and Andrej are in the clear and covered in body parts.
Holy shit.
I gape just a little longer until I hear a screech, an ear piercing cry that chills me to the bone and that's when I see it.
I see my dream start to come to fruition.
Cyril charges Kai, goes right for his throat but my mate dodges, moves, avoids the bastard’s fangs but they roll, scuffle, go down to the ground.
Running again, I yank my daggers free, stab them into the armpit of a dragon stupid enough to get in my way then zig-zag to avoid getting crushed by his big body but I'm not fast enough, not in my human form.
He goes down hard, lands on my leg, the bone breaking immediately, which is when I know I fucked up.
Kai's head spins my way, his focus now on our shared pain and not on Cyril, and that cocksucker uses it to his advantage.
That piece of shit bites down on Kai's hind leg, bites him right behind the knee and I watch in horror as my mate shifts right before my eyes.
And that, that is the exact moment my dragon finally wakes the fuck up.
Hot AF
My leg throbs, pulsates with pain from ankle to knee, a pain with no clear wound because it is in fact coming from my mate.
The gouge in my opposite leg, the gaping wound behind my knee is nothing compared to the pain I feel from my beloved, and when my eyes find hers I am struck totally fucking dumb.
White.
My beautiful Josephine's fierce green eyes are completely white, no color in them at all.
"Your throne will be mine, Kasimir the Chosen," Cyril hisses as he regains his human form and crouches over me. "I will take your head just as I took your father’s."
I growl, my gaze still locked on Posey. "You may try but I fear it will be your head who is without a body when all is said and done."
Something sharp presses to my throat, pushes against the pulse thrumming violently under my skin. Cyril leans closer, his yellow eyes dancing with so much gleeful malice I can feel it.
"You think you can win? Think you can still defeat me when I have you exactly where I want you?" He laughs, the sound like nails on a chalkboard. "I never took you for stupid, Kasimir. Perhaps when one suffers a loss such as you it affects more than just their useless heart."
I narrow my eyes on my enemy, on the man responsible for so much pain. "That is what separates us, you and I. What makes me stronger and a greater force to be reckoned with than you could ever dream to be." I grin, grin in his smug, hideous face. "I not only rule with my head, but my heart as well. My intelligence is supported by love—love for my mate, my family, my clan, my people. The only thing your useless heart loves is yourself, and that will be your undoing."
Cyril's eyes flash white, take on an even more crazed quality before he rears back, removes his sword from my throat and plunges it in my side.
Pain like I have only ever experienced once before immediately burns through my body.
I can hear Posey scream, hear her cries of both physical and emotional pain, feel the way her heart simultaneously breaks and hardens.
Her tears become mine and when grief washes through my mate I turn, turn just in time to see something I was unsure I'd ever see.
Something like a bomb goes off in the area where my mate is pinned and I momentarily worry that is exactly what happened but I can still feel her—feel her love, her anger, her hate.
I squint and shield my eyes with a trembling hand, the poison from Cyril's blade already entering my bloodstream.
I cannot see her, see my Josephine but just as the sparks begin to simmer, another explosion happens and gold fire engulfs half the valley.
The force of it shoots Cyril off of me, sends me skidding back a few feet, but it totally incinerates the other half of the valley as well as any of the Molnarva dragons littering it.
I blink repeatedly, my sight not only blurry from the light but from the pain coursing through my entire left side, and when my eyes finally focus I see the most beautiful thing I have ever seen.
My mate has shifted.
