“Yes.” Zenith nosed at his hair. “You’re mine.”
Emre’s heart skipped a beat. He glanced at Abbie and Gabel in Buttwheel’s belly, both pups tumbling over each other. Huxton was watching over them with a proud smile. “I’m ready.”
They stepped barefoot onto the Circle, Zenith taking the outermost one, and Emre on the second-largest circle.
“Once for luck,” Zenith rumbled.
They walked slowly together, hand in hand, Emre so glad that he could see his toes again. When they reached the start of the Circle, a gentle wind picked up in the cavern.
“Twice as a promise,” Zenith said.
They strolled the second lap together, listening to each other’s breathing. When they finished that lap, a sudden gustblew through the cavern, and the circles began to glow a faint blue. Emre’s pulse pattered.
He’d never expected his life to turn out this wonderfully, after he’d met Ronald. Especially after how ugly and worthless Ronald had made him feel, after all the beatings that had made him lose hope.
But Zenith had found him. Zenith had provided him and Abbie with safety, and Emre had fallen in love with Zenith’s sweetness, the way he’d opened his arms and heart so easily.
I’m safe here,he thought. And it was such a relief.
“Three times for a future well-told,” Zenith growled.
They walked together, Emre leaning into his alpha. The moment they completed the Circle for the third time, another gust blew through the cavern, and all the circles shone a bright blue.
Energy rushed from Zenith to Emre; a few of Zenith’s hairs turned grey at the temples.
“Half of my lifespan now belongs to you,” Zenith whispered. “So we can grow old together.”
Emre’s throat tightened. He turned to Zenith, his heart swelling when Zenith picked him up and kissed him full on the lips.
“Mine,” the dragon whispered.
“Yours,” Emre said, bowing his head in submission because he wanted to, not because he would be hurt if he didn’t. And that made all the difference.
“Good.” Zenith grinned, and kissed him to seal the promise.
