Tears welled up in her big blue eyes, stabbing me straight in the heart.
"Shh. He'll be fine, honey. It happens. When he goes on a rampage, it takes a while for Jay to regain control. Don't worry too much. He isn't hurt, and he’s somewhere safe."
She nodded, but I knew she wouldn't be happy until she saw him. Words of reassurance were all I could offer her, however. Jay would never forgive me if I took her to him right now. Although he realized that it was bound to happen at some point, he wanted to delay her seeing him at his worst for as long as he could.
And I don't blame him for that.
"Can I see Lilah now?" Posy asked.
"Of course. You can meet Luke's mate, too. Her name is Gisela, and she's the king's new beta."
"Wow. I was hoping it would be Peri, although Lilah thinks Peri's mate will be Tyler."
"Oh, Goddess," I groaned. "Don't talk about that stuff around me! I don't want to think about my little sister beinganyone'smate! Eww!"
The last of my worry melted away as her giggles rang out like silver bells.
She's awake, I linked my brothers, and she's going to be fine.
How do you know?Wyatt demanded.
How can you be sure?Ash asked.
What's happening?Mase wanted to know.
I showed them what I was seeing and felt them relax all at once.
Thank the Goddess for that, Jay sighed.
I leaned down and kissed her sweet dimples before carrying her upstairs to see her friend.
21: Kinds of Strength
Posy
At the top of the stairs, I saw Luke standing on one side of the door to the guest bedroom and a pretty brunette with watchful dark eyes on the other.
"Posy," Luke stepped forward, "I’d like you to meet my mate and the king’s beta, Gisela Bauer. Ela, this is Luna Posy Briggs."
"It’s a pleasure to meet you, Beta."
I studied her as I held out my hand. She was tall, lean, and muscular without being bulky. Her clothing was simple and loose, the kind that most warriors favored for easy shifting. She wore no makeup or jewelry, but her fingernails were manicured and painted black.
She built for war,Lark murmured.Same with her wolf, Hawk.
Good thing she’s the king’s beta, then. She’ll be a great guard for Lilah.
"Luna." She shook my hand with a curt nod. "It’s an honor."
"I look forward to getting to know you better," I said. "For now, I’d like to check on Lilah."
"I think she’s still asleep," Luke said, "but, yeah, let’s check on her."
I opened the door and saw that Lilah had shifted back to human. She was curled up in a ball on top of the covers, shivering and naked except for the rainbow of bruises everywhere.
I stopped Luke when he tried to follow me in.
"What?" He looked down at me.
