I laughed even more as he sat back down and scooted the chair closer to me.

“All I own is romance books, silly.”

“You don’t need them. I’ve got all the romance you could ever want.” I laughed even more as he gazed up at me. “Fuck I was so worried, baby.”

“How long have I been out?”

He sighed. “Just two days. Doc said it was your brain letting your body recover. Do you remember anything that happened?”

“Fire. There was a fire and then explosions. Oh, no! Where’s Gracie? Is she okay?”

Hawk nodded. “You saved her, baby. Threw your body on top of hers. She had some burns but could be discharged today.”

I leaned back and felt relieved that Gracie was okay. “What happened?”

He shook his head and sighed. “Somebody tried to trap you so you would burn alive. Then when that wasn’t working, they tried to knock you out.”

“I remember that... there was a hand on my leg, red hair, then boom. Blurry and dark.”

Hawk squeezed my hand. “Fucking Fran... It has to be. I’ll let Striker know. Fuck, Sav. I was so fucking scared. I thought you died. Everybody thought you died.”

“I look pretty good for a dead girl, huh?”

He laughed as he laid his head on my chest. “You’re always beautiful to me.”

I reached up and touched my head, only to realize it was all wrapped up.

“What’s on my head?”

Hawk picked his head up, and I could see the sadness in his eyes.

“You had bleeding in your brain, which led to a stroke. They had to cut your skull open to release pressure.”

“Cut... my head open? They opened my skull?” Hawk nodded. “Did they... my hair…?”

He sighed and squeezed my hand again. “I’m so sorry, baby. But they had to. I’ll buy you all the wigs you want. Any color, length, style. You name it and I’ll buy it.”

I cried, and Hawk climbed in the bed to hold me.

“Why? Why would somebody do this to me?”

Hawk just shook his head as I cried.

“Because there are evil people in the world, determined to hide all their dirty secrets and will stop at nothing. But I can promise you this; I will stop at nothing to defend you and put those motherfuckers six feet under so you can live.”

I sniffled as I looked up at him.

“I love you, Wyatt.”

“And I love you, Sav.”

There was a knock on the door, and it cracked. Lily popped her head in and smiled.

“Hey, lovebirds. Thought I heard some voices. Can I come in?”

I nodded, and she opened the door and took a seat across from my bed. Just as Lily sat down, Doctor Tickner came walking into the room.

He smiled as he moved around my bed.
