I guess the family grapevine has done its best, as always. I suppose it’s to be expected. I am De Lucas' first billionaire.

“What do you do, Jeff?”

“I’m in finance.”

“Now who’s being modest?" Gina coos. “Jeff is an investment banker.”

“Interesting work.”

“Yeah, I enjoy it.”

“Where are you from, Jeff?”

“London, originally. My family moved to the States when I was in high school.”

“He’s my very own import,” Gina swoons.

“Well, congratulations to you both.”

I’m not too keen on small talk. Besides, I spotted someone I’d much rather be talking to than my cousin. The dark haired maid of honor has me all hot and bothered. I watched her during the ceremony. In fact, I couldn’t take my eyes off her. She’s exquisite.

She’s standing next to the buffet table, so I make my way over. I look at her left hand to make sure I’m not too late. Good. No ring.

The beautiful woman turns suddenly and bumps into me. The glass of champagne she’s holding spills its contents onto my shoe.

“Oh, shit! I’m so sorry,” she stammers. “It’s my first glass too. Imagine what I’d do after another.”

I’m transfixed as the woman’s piercing blue eyes rest on mine.

Come on, Dante. What’s your problem? Say something.

“Hi. I’m Dante. Don’t worry about it. I’m sure my shoe will survive the assault.”

“You’re too kind. It’s nice to meet you, Dante. I’m Mia.”

“Ah, è un piacere incontrarti, Mia.”

“Oh, sorry. I don’t speak Italian.”

“Really? With a name like Mia, I just assumed.”

“Yeah, you’d think. My mother was a hopeless romantic movie buff. She named me after Mia Farrow.”

“So, you’re a friend of Gina’s.”

“Yes. I just adore her. How do you know her?”

“We’re distant cousins.”

“I see. More family,” she chuckles.

“I take it you’ve met the army.”

“Indeed. Not that I’m complaining. It must be wonderful to be a part of such a large family.”

“It has its challenges. But, for the most part, it comes with the territory when you’re Italian.”

“Well, I think it’s wonderful. Do you live here in Erice?”
