“So, they’re real?” asked Kellan, surprise on his face.
“Yes. The Weird Sisters are real,” confirmed Jonathan, wanting to change the subject. He would have, had he not sensed just how much the young wolf-shifter needed to talk with someone about whatever had been troubling him.
“Weird Sisters?” asked Kellan.
With a shrug, Jonathan began to walk once more. “I didn’t name them.”
Kellan followed closely.
“Prince Dick-u-la himself called them that,” admitted Jonathan. “I just went with it. Guess Stoker thought that was good enough for them too. From the details he did include, I have to wonder if they didn’t pay him a visit at some point. Because there were things he mentioned that I never told him. Thingsno onebut me knew.”
“So, they really did…?” Kellan’s words fell away, remaining unspoken between them.
“Pin me down and use me as a refillable bloody juice box?” asked Jonathan, attempting to lighten the mood.
“Yeah,” Kellan responded.
“They did.” Jonathan glanced upward at the moon, finding solace in it. He pressed a smile to his face when he glanced at Kellan again. “Jealous?”
“No,” whispered Kellan as he shook his head. “Being pinned under them as they take what they want from you, without your permission, all the while mocking you, doesn’t sound like it would be the least bit fun.”
“It wasn’t,” said Jonathan. In the past, when the topic came up with others, most made a comment about how they’d be more than happy to be stuck under the thumb of three beautiful seductresses, even if they had fangs and demons in them. It was easy to think that was the case. Living it was something altogether different. To this very day, Jonathan was never on his back when he was intimate with women. No. He remained in control, never fully surrendering himself to them.
“I’m sorry,” said Kellan softly. “That you had to go through that.”
Jonathan took a deep breath and inclined his head once more. “Can we talk about something else?”
“Yeah,” replied Kellan, offering nothing.
After a few minutes of silence, Jonathan spoke. “Have anyone special in your life? Someone you maybe haven’t mentioned to your parents for fear your mother will read too much into it and start sending out wedding invites?”
Kellan erupted into laughter so loud that it drew looks from others passing by. He banged on his chest. “You know Mom well.”
“I do,” said Jonathan. “And I know she wants you happy.”
Kellan scratched the back of his neck. “I know.”
“So, are you avoiding answering the question for fear I’ll report back to her or because there isn’t anyone special?” asked Jonathan.
“Actually, I’m avoiding answering because I’m not sure of the answer myself,” confessed Kellan. “I mean, there is a girl. Technically, we’re just friends, study buddies.”
Jonathan lifted a brow. “Is that code for sex without strings?”
Kellan grinned. “I wish. Things came kind of close a few weeks ago, but my wolf was acting up. I put the brakes on it quick, worried something would go wrong.”
“By wrong, you mean your wolf side?” asked Jonathan.
Kellan nodded. “Yeah. I could feel it trying to rise. I ended things fast and got the hell out of there.”
“Have you talked to the girl since then?” asked Jonathan.
“No. I tried, but I keep chickening out.” Kellan bit at his inner cheek. “I thought my feelings for Dana had been strong. She was my first girlfriend, and I haven’t actually officially dated anybody since. I’ve just sort of hooked up with girls. Nothing serious though.”
“But you want to be dating this new girl?” asked Jonathan.
“Yes. No. I don’t know,” confessed Kellan. “I have a pull to her. I like being around her. Normally, her presence kind of calms my wolf side. But that stopped the minute I was about to seal the deal.”
Jonathan patted the young shifter’s shoulder and gave it a reassuring squeeze. “You’ll get it sorted, mate.”
