Kellan stared at him for what felt like forever before he paused and sniffed the air. His gaze whipped toward the library just as a group of women was exiting it. Kellan stood straighter, and for a second, his eyes began to show signs of a pending shift.
Jonathan’s wolf nearly responded, ready to launch into alpha mode to control the young shifter if the need arose. He followed Kellan’s gaze and found it locked on an attractive brunette with an arm full of books.
“That wouldn’t happen to be the woman you’re interested in, would it?” asked Jonathan.
Kellan didn’t seem to hear him at first. After a second, he looked at Jonathan. “I’m sorry, what?”
“The woman,” said Jonathan with a snort. “Is thather?”
Kellan’s eyes widened. “How did you know?”
“Lucky guess,” said Jonathan.
The group of women noticed Kellan. A small blonde nudged the brunette and nodded in Jonathan and Kellan’s direction.
For a second, Jonathan thought Kellan might actually bolt in the other direction.
“Take a deep breath,” said Jonathan out of the side of his mouth. “You have to talk to her eventually.”
“What if she hates me?” asked Kellan, his voice low, tension filling his body.
The brunette smiled wide and waved. “Kellan, we were just headed over to Dark Side Pizza to grab a pie and some beers. Up for joining us?”
A raven-haired woman pointed. “He’s with his dad. It would be rude for him to ditch the guy.”
Jonathan winced as he heard himself being referred to as Kellan’s father.
The brunette shook her head. “I’m not sure who that is, but it’s not his father.
Another woman, this one with deep red hair, smiled in a wanton manner in Jonathan’s direction. “Mmm, whoever he is, he’stotallyinvited to come along too.”
The women came closer.
Kellan stifled a laugh. “Uh, he’s actually my…uncle?”
He was, but there was a hell of a lot of greats between him and Kellan, considering how distantly they were related.
“You up for it?” asked Kellan of him.
While the women were all incredibly attractive, Jonathan had no interest in spending the evening with them. It was evident that Kellan did. They could talk later.
“Do you need me as a wingman?” asked Jonathan, needing to be sure Kellan had control of his wolf side.
Kellan took a deep breath. “I’m good. I swear.”
“Go on and have fun,” said Jonathan with a wink.
Kellan laughed. “Oh, I intend to.”
“That a boy,” returned Jonathan with a grin.
Jonathan remained in place, watching Kellan run over to the women only to be basically swarmed. He nearly laughed. “Ah, to be young again.”
As the words left his mouth, his hackles raised, and a chill went down his spine. Turning slowly, he peered around the common area, trying to locate the source of whatever was causing his wolf to respond. Aside from a few students and a bunch of stone gargoyle statues, there was nothing to be seen.
Still, something was off.
His wolf peeked up, assisting Jonathan as he sniffed the air and listened deeper, tapping into his supernatural side. There was an eerie and unnatural silence that greeted him. Even with the time of night and the limited number of students out and about, the campus should have been noisier. It was as if something was dampening the sounds.
