As irritated as I was with, I was a little impressed with how ballsy she was to do that. To shut the door on an Alpha was something no one would do, and there she was, doing it. She kept surprising me, and I was starting to wonder if I'd pegged her wrong growing up.
I inhaled slowly, fearing she wasn't going to show up. I didn't want to know what the Council would do if she didn't. They wouldn't be pleased to see her going against a direct order. But I didn't see Sam as the person to go against them either. Everything idea that popped into my head quickly fizzled out.
I glanced over my shoulder as I heard the door open and shut behind me. Henrik stood in the doorway. He was wearing a suit just like mine. His arms were pulled behind his back, his shoulder straight. He held no expression, and I wondered how he felt about all of this.
I looked back at myself, pulling my hands up, making sure the tie was on right. "Is your sister here yet?"
Henrik raised an eyebrow at me, his lips pulled into a tight line. It was only for a moment before he forced a smile and walked towards me. "How about you tell me why you didn't inform me about my little sister being your mate? Why did I have to hear it from the Council."
I glanced at him, seeing the frustration in his eyes. "I thought she would have told you. Asked you to somehow get her out of it."
Henrik huffed, and I knew he couldn't deny that. I knew they were close and had always been since they were little. I honestly expected to hear there was a delay because Henrik somehow got involved. But nothing was said. Nothing happened.
I turned to him. "Is Sam here?"
"I haven't seen her," he said with a shrug. "But I know my sister. If she says she's going to be here, she will be. I was busy chatting with your parents anyway; I didn't get the chance to check on her."
I turned to reach for the glass of water and took a sip. It did little to help calm my nerves. I could only imagine how that went down. My folks likely had their feelings about this, and Henrik, being civil, didn't say much.
Henrik walked over, sitting down on one of the couches. He grabbed the bottle of champagne that was left out and poured himself a glass. He downed the entire glass and sighed softly.
"If you hurt my sister in any way, Jay. I will come for you, and I will destroy your world." Henrik poured himself another glass and looked at me. "I will only say it once."
I stuffed my hands into my pocket. "Really sweet words coming from my best man."
Henrik laughed, but it was cut short. "You may be my best friend and the person I tell everything to, but she is my sister. She is above you, and I will always pick her side. And if you don't treat her right, I'll know."
I knew he meant every word, and I needed to tread carefully throughout this entire situation as if I wasn't already worried enough as it was.
"Noted," I said, giving him a nod. "You can go. I'm sure you're eager to see your sister, and I can't avoid my family anymore."
Henrik gave me one nod before he pulled himself up and slipped back out the door. I looked at myself again in the mirror before turning and slipping out of the room.
I followed the hallway until I made it to the front entrance, where my parents stood. My father was a tall man that was built like a brick house. We were a matching pair, as my mother said. I looked a lot like my father, having the same hair and eye color. We had the same jawline and the same smile and frown.
My mother was a foot shorter than my father, with light brown hair and deep brown eyes. She wore a pale blue dress that matched my father's, who wore a light gray suit. They looked like a perfect couple, and it was something I had always aimed for. My father was the iron fist, while my mother was the soft, delicate one. But just because she was soft didn't mean she didn't know how to harden herself.
My mother spotted me coming towards them, and her eyes sparkled as she scanned my suit. "Oh, Jay. That looks so lovely on you."
I gave my mother a soft smile before looking at my father, who gave me a nod.
"When does this start?" he asked, his eyes looking around the space, and I knew he was looking for Sammy. His jaw was tight, and his eyes were scanning the crowd. There weren't a lot of people here, but all of the Alphas were. They stood chatting a few feet away.
"In about ten minutes," I said.
My father grunted and shook his head. "Pity this is."
"Ralph," my mother quickly elbowed my father. "Don't start."
My father ignored my mother, shaking his head. "I can be unhappy if I want, Lily. Our Alpha son is forced to marry a human. Someone that is clearly beneath him in many ways."
I swallowed, watching the hurt look cross my mother's face. While my mother would never say those words, I could see she thought the same thing.
I inhaled slowly. "It is what it is."
"A pity," my father grumbled, shaking his head.
"Is Dusty coming?" I asked, thinking of my younger brother, who was just turning eighteen.
