However before I could get back to my discarded phone, pounding on my front door exploded along with a deep voice taunting, “Open the door, pretty girl, before I knock it down.”

His threat triggered my body to jerk in alarm. Then a brief moment of panic seized me before I got my wits about me. “Get out of here before I call the cops! And I have a gun I won’t hesitate to use.” I yelled back, thinking the mention of a weapon would get him to leave.

“They won’t get here in time.” He sneered. “And I’m armed as well. I’d love the chance to see which one of us would win in a fight.” His pounding grew more forceful and my door shook with the thuds.

Grayson bellowing from my phone drew my attention away from the door.

I snatched my phone from the floor and put it up to my ear.

“What the fuck is going on, Brooke? I’m on my way.” Between his anxious tone and him calling me by my actual name, I knew he was as rattled as me.

“You don’t have to, Grayson. Just stay on the line with me until the cops come. They’ll be here shortly. The house alarm rings right to them. My dad has it set up that way.” The high pitched wail in the distance indicated that was still the case. “Besides, I have a gun and I know how to use it.”

The banging on my door continued, rattling the pictures hanging on the front wall of my house, with the asshole tossing out more threats.

But before I could retreat to my bedroom to grab my gun, I recalled . . . fuck, the open window. I sprinted across my living room and slammed the thing closed and locked it. Then I resumed reassuring Grayson it would be alright. Amazingly, I was able to keep my voice calm even as my entire body shook with fear. “They don’t even call to see if it’s legit or not. They just show up and sort things out when they get here.”

“Doesn’t matter. I’m almost there. But I’m keeping you on the line until I actually see you.” The roaring of his bike accelerating covered whatever he said next.

But it wouldn’t have mattered because in the next instant the siren’s deafening decibels clued me in to the fact the police had just pulled up.

Rushing to my front door, which I had just noticed wasn’t rocking from its hinges anymore; I peeked out the small window to see my dad rushing up the side walk.

Flinging the door open, I allowed him to tug me into his chest. “Are you okay, Brooke?” His strong arms held me tight. “I was just in the next neighborhood when your alarm sounded.”

“I think so. Just a little shaken up. Where did the asshole go?” I glanced over my dad’s shoulder, but no one else was on the porch.

“I don’t know, but I sent Jimmy to search around your place and the nearby houses.”

“He was pounding the hell out of my door and yelling like a maniac. What the hell is wrong with people?”

Before he could respond, a motorcycle thundered down my street and skidded onto my lawn. Grayson had barely turned off his ignition before laying his bike in the grass and racing up the steps to stand before my dad and me.

“Shit, Brooke. Your line went dead. You scared the fuck out of me.” Grayson eyed me up and down, probably looking for new bruises, before he swung his gaze to my dad. “Chief Nolan.”

My dad’s responding turbulent glare had me bracing for a showdown.

~Grayson~

The chief’s irate brown eyes held nothing but disdain for me as he scowled in my direction. “It’s Chief Wolfe. We aren’t on a first name basis, biker.” He snarled, spitting out the last word like it tasted foul. Then he shifted his attention back to his daughter. “How does this MC trash know where you live and your name?”

Anger stirred deep in my chest, but I bit back my irritation. This was Brooke’s dad and I had to play nice.

She shoved out of his embrace and tossed her hands onto her hips. “That was uncalled for. I met him when I was out with Dani and we’ve been getting to know one another.”

Her dad’s eyes narrowed and he examined her face. “Where did you get the bruises? Did he fucking hit you?” He roared.

“Don’t you dare.” She hissed between clenched teeth before walking over to stand beside me. “Grayson saved me from being dragged away by some asshole from the bar. I don’t know what would have happened had he not intervened. I was lucky he bothered to help out a complete stranger.”

“I don’t like you going out to bars. They aren’t safe and you meet trash like this.” He gestured an angry finger in my direction.

“I’m twenty five and you don’t dictate what I do. And stop calling him that. You’re being a jerk.” To my surprise, she snaked her arm around my waist and leaned into my side. Then she peeked at the phone still clasped in her hand. “I’m so sorry, Grayson. I must have accidentally hung up when I hugged my dad.”

“I’m being truthful. It was probably a club member banging down your door just now.”

“And how can you be sure it wasn’t just some everyday thug you need to get off of the streets?”
