"Then we don't." She sighed against my chest. "We make a promise to each other to always fight for each other instead of against each other. To fight for our happily ever after no matter how hard it gets."
I smiled against her head. "I will never stop fighting for us, Kai."
"Good," she whispered. "Because I'm pregnant."
Freezing, my smile faded, and my chest tightened.
"Jax?" She leaned back, her gaze meeting mine. "You're not about to panic again, are you?"
"Did you say you're pregnant?"
She nodded.
Holy fuck, she's pregnant.

Staring up at him, I couldn't tell whether he was about to throw up or bolt, but the panic covering his face was front and center. A wave of nervous nausea washed over me. That wasn't exactly how I'd planned to tell him, but I was scared, and the look on his face at that moment was why.
He stepped back, sinking into one of the dining room chairs as he stared off into space. "Are you sure?" His gaze shifted to mine.
I'd asked the same question three times to the doctor, so I understood his shock. I'd had time to come to terms with the news; he hadn't.
"Yes." I smiled, nodding. I strolled to the front door, where my purse was sitting on an entryway stand. I dug through it, fishing out the ultrasound photo before returning to Jax and handing him the picture. He took the picture, his lips parting as he stared at it. "Cam took me to the doctor this morning and then to lunch."
"Wait," he said, his head snapping up, and his gaze met mine. His brows furrowed. "So, Cam knows?"
"Yeah, I wasn't feeling good, and I was late, so she bought me a home test. I took three, and they were all positive. I was in shock, and I didn't believe it, so she offered to take me in to be sure. I am sure now. We saw the baby's heartbeat."
"Kai, why didn't you tell me?" I could hear the hurt in his words as he pushed out of the chair, setting the picture on the table. "Why didn't you tell me you were late? Or that you didn't feel good?"
"I guess I was scared of how you would react." I held my hand out, gesturing to him. "Can you blame me? Look at how you're handling it now."
"Kai." He sighed. "I'm in shock and still trying to wrap my head around the idea of being a dad, but I'm in this with you, and I would have been there for you today. You should have told me. You should have given me the opportunity to be there for you and my baby."
"I'm sorry." I sighed. My stomach churned with regret and sadness. I hadn't meant to take anything away from him. I was scared he'd do what he always did: panic, shut down, and run, but that wasn't fair. I should have given him the opportunity to be there if he wanted to. "A baby is a huge commitment, and I was afraid of throwing too much at you all at once."
He huffed out a laugh. "I guess I deserved that." He glanced back at the picture and then at me. "So, I'm going to be a dad?" His lips curved into a smile, and I nodded. "Okay." His gaze flicked around the small living space. "We are going to have a baby." I smiled. "We should probably start looking for a bigger place."
"So, you're okay?"
"Yeah," he said. "I never wanted to have a family until you Kai. It's a little sooner than planned, but I love you and can't wait to see what our future holds." He pulled me in for a hug, wrapping his arms tightly around me and holding me against him. "Are you okay?"
"I was in a bit of shock, and I was a little scared to tell you, but..."
"Kaia," he cut me off. "You don't ever have to be scared to tell me anything. I'm in this with you, and I don't want to miss anything. I know I messed up before your accident, but I never plan on making those mistakes again."
"I'm sorry I didn't tell you. I should have."
"We're in this together," he said. "So we figure this out together."
"Like telling our parents."
He cleared his throat as he nodded. "Yeah." He sighed. "My mom will be stoked, but I'm afraid your dad might kill me."
I huffed out a laugh. "No, my dad will be excited too, but I would like to wait to tell anyone. I want to get used to the idea before everyone else finds out."
"Okay." He nodded.
