“We didn’t kill Jax,” I say calmly. “He was a friend and a member of our clan. We loved him. His death was an accident. A horrible accident. But just an accident.” It feels awful to actually say out loud. Like it wasn’t true before I said it.

The first agent leans across the table to get in my face again. “Liar. You killed him and staged the accident to cover it up. Didn’t you? You shifters have no-!”

Now I feel the urge to shift, but I suppress it. My hand starts to curl into a fist, if he continues for a second more, I’ll punch him. I know I will, I won’t be able to stop it.

The door to the integration room swings open and an older man walks in. Both agents jump to their feet. The man walks in and glares at all four of us. He just unknowingly saved his agent, and me and Gnash from their retaliation.

“Chief Vance, what’re you doing here, sir?” The first agent nervously looks at the second, who returns the look.

“Chief, we were about to wrap it up here. These two shifters obviously killed their friend and kidnapped that woman… right?” Wow, these agents aren’t evening trying to hide how corrupt they are.

“Both of you out.” Chief Vance glares at his agents.

“But sir-”

“Out.”

“We were just about to-”

“Now.”

The agents look at each other, at me and Gnash, and finally at the stern face of Chief Vance. They both hang their heads and head for the door. Chief Vance slams the door behind them.

Chief Vance pinches the bridge of his nose in silent contemplation. Gnash and I look at each other. We both have no idea what’s happening.

Finally, Chief Vance actually looks at the two of us. “You’re free to go.”

Gnash and I look at each other. Chief Vance walks over to the door and opens it wide. He gestures for us to go through. Neither of us move.

“Are you two deaf? You can leave.”

This has to be a trap. Right? No way PEACE is just letting us go. This is some cruel trick. There will be guards or something waiting in the hallway to kill us.

“Please, just get out of my building. I have had averylong night. I’d just like for it to be over.”

Gnash and I look at each other. This Chief Vance seems to be sincere. Plus, it’ll be easier to find a way to escape if we aren’t locked in this room. I nod at Gnash and we both stand up.

“Take a right down this hall, you’ll find a stairwell. Go up two floors and that will open up into the lobby. I trust you can find your way out from there.”

Chief Vance continues to glare at us as we walk past. The hallway is empty, no traps, yet. We cautiously follow his directions and find the stairwell to be the same amount of empty.

From there, we race up the stairs to the deserted lobby and hurry outside. We crash into the cool night air, the only light coming from the moon and a few street lights in the parking lot. It must be early morning, maybe 3 A.M.

“What now?” Gnash looks at me for direction.

“We need them to think we’ve left, then we break back in and find Mckenna. Her father probably-”

“Hey boys!” I turn and see Mckenna waiting for us.

“You’re okay!” I race over to her and wrap her up in a big hug, lifting her off her feet. She hugs me back.

“Yeah, I’m okay, Mace. I’m actually better than okay.” She pulls out some car keys and clicks a button. A nearby car chirps.

“You… You got a car? How did you get a car?” I put her down and Mckenna struts over to the vehicle. She looks back at me with a big smile.

“I got a lot more than just a car, hop in. I’ll tell you on the drive.”
