MCKENNA

We speed off towards Albuquerque as soon as I hear their seatbelts click. There are some complaints from Gnash as I didn’t give him a chance to settle comfortably. The ride is shorter this time, but I still can’t take any chance of getting caught.

We’re only about 20 minutes away from the entrance to the underground headquarters. It’ll give us time to get some well-deserved sleep before the big plan tomorrow evening. Our faces are starting to show the effects of stress, no sleep, and inadequate eating.

“What else did you get?” Mace asks.

I take out the blueprints from between my legs. I hand them to him so he and Gnash can take a good look. It’ll give us a more clear approach on what we’ll do tomorrow. Gnash leans in from the backseat to take a closer look.

“What’s all this?” he asks.

“The blueprint of the underground headquarters. It’ll be easier on us tomorrow instead of second-guessing ourselves.”

Mace raises a brow. “That’s great, but is this all you managed to get? I don’t want to sound like a jerk about but—”

I stop him. “Don’t worry, I heard more than enough. My father told the PEACE chief it’s a nationwide plot to turn humans against shifters, as they already knew. But what they don’t know is that there’s a way to stop it.”

Mace quickly responds. “How?”

His voice turns to a deep growl. It’s the most menacing sound that’s ever come out of his throat. I know it’s not directed at me, but at the other bastards.

He continues. “We have to get justice for Jax. We’regoingto get justice for Jax.”

Gnash nods with a scowl. I sigh internally at their reactions. I can see they’re still incredibly heartbroken about it, understandably.

I don’t have a tight-knit group of friends, or even family, like they do. I can imagine how utterly horrible and difficult it’d be to just move on with a sudden death. Especially since we know it’s not an accident.

Even though Jax and I weren’t as close as he is with these two, I’m heartbroken too. He was a sweet guy albeit a little stupid and paranoid. It was part of who he was. I want to get back at those responsible just as much as Mace and Gnash do.

Which is why we have to focus. We can’t be blinded by anger and sadness. If we let ourselves get overrun by emotions, we’ll be reckless and blow over our whole plan.

I grip the steering wheel. “We will get justice. It’s just not going to be easy to—”

“I don’t care how hard it is or whatever we have to do. We’re doing it,” Gnash says.

I begin to explain. “If we destroy the vats the chemical compound is being held in and the documents detailing how to make itandkill the only scientist who knows the ‘recipe’, there won’t be any way for them to remake it or continue.”

“We have to destroy a whole compound and kill a scientist?” Mace remarks.

“That’s the information I managed to get. I was pressed for time but it’s basically the general idea of what we have to do,” I say.

“So onlyonescientist knows how to make this shit? Since they’re planning to take the nation against shifters, wouldn’t they need more scientists in on it? It’s risky of them to operate like that.”

I shrug. “I guess so. Maybe that guy just made the recipe or they have an actual factory making the serum.”

They both sigh. “Yeah, maybe. At least we have a good grasp on things. We’ll just have to figure out missing details along the way,” Mace says.

I chuckle. “That’s the spirit.”

“Is there anything else?” Gnash says.

I bite the inside of my cheeks. There’s one certain detail that I DID NOT want to hear, ever. It sent me over the edge of madness when I heard it. I’m afraid how these two will take it.

“The PEACE chief told me that 'that girl’ Natalie…is my father’s new sidepiece. Which makes a lot of sense as to why she is so devoted to Insignys—”

“THAT WHORE!”

I almost swerve when Mace slams his hand against the dashboard. Gnash buries his fingers into the seat. Oh no, this is what I was afraid of.
