MACE

There are a lot of people nowadays saying they’re going to eat the rich. Well, my pack and I? We’re gonna fucking do it.

“You ready for this?” I ask Jax as we walk through Camp Cristopher. “You ready to hear my plan?”

Always at my side, my clan brother nods at me. He’s not saying anything else; he doesn’t need to. He and I have been through enough fucking shit together that we don’t need to speak for days, and we’ll still communicate just fine. Besides, he’s not much of a talker.

“You know it. I’ve been wanting to hear it ever since you told us to meet you here. It’s time we take back what’s ours,” says the voice next to me, and I turn to see Gnash.

“Hell yeah, brother,” I whisper.

“I’ve been waiting for this day for a long fucking time,” he says, and I nod. “After all the shit I’ve been through since the Veil fell, what, maybe 10 or 12 years ago?”

“Everyone’s been through some sort of shit since the Veil fell,” I respond. “Hell, even the normies have probably had their share of shit to deal with.”

Jax laughs softly as we walk past the ramshackle buildings and tents that house our clan.

“What?” I ask. “Everyone had their lives changed when they discovered thatparanormal beingswere just living alongside them all the time. “

“If you say so,” he replies suspiciously.

“Imagine being some schmo,” I continue. “Living in some boring ass suburbia tract home and drinking your fucking latte before heading to your corporate job in a BMW. The same one you leased to keep up appearances with the Joneses’ and one morning, discovering this magical fucking Veil that had kept the truth hidden from you had fallen.

“Now all of a sudden, you see that neighbor you thought just had a big nose in a new light. He’s actually a fucking panther shifter and prowls around at night. You see a goddamn dragon fly by – maybe the Veil kept you from noticing in the past, but no such luck now.

“So you don’t know what the fuck is going on in the world, and you discover that your boss really is a fucking demon sent to torture you, and holy shit! You were right all along. Also, your mother-in-law is a goddamn witch; isn’t that nice? She’s been practicing magic this entire time, and she’s got a fucking talking cat. Oh…and your daughter?”

I shake my head with a grin. “She’s coming home telling you that she just realized the broody dude she was dating is a gargoyle now that the Veil has fallen, and guess who's coming to the extended family dinner tomorrow night? Everyone you never knew was a paranormal being.”

Ghash barks a laugh.

“Yeah, all our lives were pretty much changed. It’s a miracle that we didn’t descend into absolute fucking anarchy.”

He rolls his eyes and looks at me. “Yeah, yeah, yeah, I’ve heard it all before, Mace, but you’re forgetting that those mundane humans might have had their lives changed, but they didn’t get played the way we did.”

I’m silent, aware that he’s got a point. That’s basically why the three of us are doing anything today, because of what Gnash is going on about.

“We didn’t letourcorporations go in and corral entire wolf clans and shove them into ‘reservations!’ We didn’t make a bullshit press speech saying we wanted to protect us in our natural fucking habitats,” he continues, getting more frustrated by the minute. “We didn’t mine and log their lands. You don’t see us taking over their malls and experimenting on their kids. You don’t see the government dealing with human rights and figuring out how much is too much freedom.”

“It’s all about supernatural rights or metahuman rights,” Jax agrees.

“Listen,” I say. “I agree. I just asked you guys if you were fucking ready for this.”

“I just get worried when I hear you taking the normie’s side,” Gnash admits. “I don’t want you getting cold feet and all.”

“No,” I respond with a steely voice, his doubt making anger surge through me. Being questioned by my pack is something that will always infuriate me. They should know that I will never side with the enemies.

“Insignys Corporation will pay with the only thing they have of fucking value.” My voice is cold as I lead them out of the camp. This ends now.

“How?” Jax stops behind me with crossed arms.

“What’s the only thing we have in common with humans?” I ask, whipping around and baring my teeth. The two remain silent, and I roll my eyes. “Family, you idiots. We take something they would never give up easily.”

Gnash scoffs. “His wife isn’t even hot.”

“That doesn’t fucking matter. We’re not after her anyway. We want the daughter.”
