“Then they’re just going to come after us!” Jax exclaims.
“No,” I snarl. “They’re going to work out a fucking deal with us. No more ridiculous rent and bullshit housing for the Big Sky clan. No more shitty food and ‘reservations.’ We had this land before they fucking came along, and now we’re taking it back, so are you jackasses with me on this or not?”

The Insignys building is impressive, but nothing the rich haven’t done before. Glass windows everywhere, remarkable chandeliers in the middle of the building, anything flashy to tell the outside world they’re making millions.
At the same time, the rest of us scramble to make ends meet. It’s not just showing off - it’s a condescending reminder of the hell they’ve sentenced our kind to over the years.
Gnash darts around the corner of the building to where Jax and I are. “His car’s gone. She’s alone.”
My eyes peer into the building as a young woman walks toward the main desk, organizing papers and putting everything in order. Judging by her figure and obliviousness, she won’t be hard to kidnap. Blonde, thin, and professionally dressed. That’s the CEO’s daughter, alright, the perfect target for our plan.
“She’s his fucking daughter.” Jax shifts next to me. “Maybe this isn’t a good idea.”
“Shut thefuckup, Jax!” Gnash whips around and grabs him by the shirt. “You remember what it was like losingeverything, don’t you?”
“Y-yes.”
“Then grow some fucking balls. You’re the lookout.” He releases Jax and scowls at him before turning back to the building. “You wouldn’t be any fucking good doing anything else.”
“Hey-”
“Will you two get your fucking heads together? We have to get her the second she’s out the door. The cameras in the lot will see us if we don’t do this quickly.”
Looking at her through the glass, I determine the best way to get her is by grabbing her waist. She probably doesn’t weigh more than a large tree branch, an easy catch.
“Gnash, shift now,” I command, not looking away from the girl. “And keep your fucking mouths shut. We don’t know how soundproof that glass is.”
With a low growl, Gnash morphs behind me, his skin replaced by coarse fur and snapping teeth. I turn to look at him and nod my head toward the building as the girl walks out.
Gnash sprints toward the front door as the girl exits. She turns to lock the door, but Gnash gets between her and the entrance to the building – her safety.
He’s done exactly as instructed. Her back is to me. It’s time to strike.
“Hey!”
I whip around to see a security guard running at us.God fucking dammit. I didn’t want to shift tonight.
Jax shifts with me, and we race toward the guard, who pulls out a gun and aims it at us with trembling hands. He fires three shots, the first ricocheting off the wall of the building and hitting Jax in the shoulder. The second grazes my neck, a minor wound that will heal in minutes, and the third shoots into the air.Who the fuck hired this jackass?
The guard presses a button on his belt, and the alarms sound. He turns his face into his shoulder where a radio that he’s probably never used before is fixed against his uniform.
“1670, 1670, we have metahuman intruders on the property; I repeat, we have intruders on the property.”
“Shit,” Jax curses beside me.
“They were always meant to find us anyway.”
I say it to keep us focused on moving forward, not our mistakes. But I still sigh, knowing we should have planned the raid better. Ready, fire aim; that’s always how our clan fights.
Most of the time, it works, but we’re not up against vampires or tiger shifters who think the same way. We’re up against billionaires using their intelligence to take over our world.
I eye Gnash at the front of the building, taking on guards of his own while the girl runs into the parking lot.Of course, this didn’t go as planned.
My paws race over the cool concrete as I growl at the woman, who looks over her shoulder in terror as she screams. I shift back into human form right before I catch her, holding her hands behind her back and my hand around her throat.
“Scream again; I fucking dare you.”
