One night. Somehow, that made things a little better—but only fractionally.

“You kept it from me… and let her manipulate you into pushing me back into her arms time and time again. I thought you were my friend… and looking out for my best interests. I listened to you, man.”

Adam eyed him. “I’m sorry.”

“That’s all you got?”

“I never wanted to hurt you.”

Clay winced. “Yeah, but you did. Over and over again.” He turned back to his duffel and finished shoving his few items inside. Once he zipped it up, he flung it over one shoulder and stalked past Adam.

“Where are you going?”

“None of your concern,” Clay said.

“Clay…”

Clay turned on his way to the front door.

Adam stared, his mouth open as if he wanted to say something.

But he didn’t.

After a moment of silence, Clay turned back and headed out. He tossed the duffel and box into the back where his other bag of clothes and box of stuff still sat. He hadn’t even had a chance to get the rest of his shit inside before he learned the news.

Clay sat in the car, not moving for a few minutes. He hated arguing with Adam. They’d done it more and more over the years.

Since he fucked my girlfriend.

He backed out, feeling like hell. Feeling let down by the one person he thought he could trust.

The one person he’d sacrificed so much for.

Chapter Five

The following day…

Clay seethed. Work would’ve been much easier if he didn’t have to sense Adam all over the place. Everywhere he turned, there Adam was. As soon as he stepped into a room, Adam dove out, avoiding him, but the fact they were in the same area code was almost too much.

By lunchtime, he’d had enough. He packed up his laptop and files and shoved them into his case before jetting off. He could easily work from home half the time—not that he currently had a home. Hayden’s dining table would have to work, for now.

He was barely out of the parking lot before his cell rang. He hit the Call button on his steering wheel.Thank the heavens for Bluetooth. “Yeah?”

“So I was thinking,” his friend Jesse said through the speakers. “We all need a guys’ night out.”

“No can do, man,” Clay answered. “I’m busy.”

“I haven’t even told you when, dude.”

It didn’t matter. A guys’ night meant Adam, and he wasn’t planning on being anywhere near that guy anytime soon. It was bad enough he’d had to go there to get his shit. “I’ve got a lot of things going on right now… I’m sure I can’t make it.”

“This have anything to do with Adam?”

Clay was silent. How the fuck did Hayden already know his business? “What the fuck does that mean?”

“I got the suspicion last time I talked to him that you two had pissed each other off,” Jesse answered.

“Man, I don’t have time for this,” Clay said.
