Jesse was silent a moment. “But he’s not?”

“I gotta go—I told you it wasn’t a good time,” Adam murmured.

“You guys fighting?”

“Gotta run,” Adam said before clicking off and tossing the phone to the bed. He scrubbed his hands over his face, feeling even more like shit. One more friend he was being shitty with. If he kept this up, he’d lose them all. He, Clay, Jesse, Hayden, and Benji had been tight all through college… but life had gotten in the way of those relationships.

He hated the way things were going and had no idea how to fix any of it.

Especially not when he was hungover.

Adam rolled back to his side and buried himself in the covers, wishing he could hide from the world forever—and knowing he needed to drag his ass up to catch a ride back to get his car.

In a few minutes…

After work…

Clay was headed back to Adam’s to get his shit, not sure where he’d end up. He put in a call to Hayden on the way.

“’Ello?”

“You got room for me on your couch?” Clay asked. “Just for a few nights?”

“I thought you went to Adam’s?”

“I did. I can’t stay.”

“Why not?” Hayden asked.

“Long story. And I don’t feel like getting into it.”

Hayden was quiet a moment. “Yeah… the couch is yours.”

“Thanks.”

Moments later, he pulled into Adam’s drive. He saw Adam’s Audi sitting in the drive, so he’d at least gone and picked up his car. Clay stalked up to the door and knocked. A few moments later, Adam answered and Clay’s jaw set.

“Just came to get my shit.”

Adam stepped back silently.

Clay crossed the threshold and made his way to the guest room where he began shoving his clothes back into the big duffel he’d brought. Thankfully, he hadn’t unpacked much.

Not that he had much to call his own anymore.

Now he was losing one more thing.

“You don’t have to go,” Adam mumbled from the doorway.

“Yeah, I do,” Clay said from over his shoulder. He spun to face Adam, questions forming in his mind. “How long?”

Adam frowned. “Huh?”

“How long were you screwing her?”

“It was one night,” Adam said. “It was a huge mistake… a mistake I wish I could take back.” Adam paused, looking down. “I was drunk. Really drunk. I didn’t even remember most of it until weeks later.”
