“What about a younger man?” Harper waggled her eyebrows at her. “You’re forty-three. That’s, like, prime sex age for a woman, right? Like, you want to bang all the time, yeah? Get yourself a nice, sweet guy in his twenties and rock his world.”

“Not a chance,” Savina said. “One, I have zero interest in dating a younger man, and two, no man in his twenties would look twice at this old body of mine.”

“Oh please, you look like you’re in your early thirties, and you and everyone else in town know it. You’re fucking hot,” Harper said.

Savina grinned. “Yeah, I’m pretty hot. My tits are incredible.”

“They really are,” Harper said. “Okay, younger men are out. What about someone in their fifties?”

“Not much different from men in their forties.”

“Seriously?” Harper said. “Because Hal is in his fifties, and he seems pretty emotionally mature.”

Savina’s cheeks turned red. “Yeah, well, I’m not interested in him. He’s Alan’s best friend, Harper.”

“I know,” Harper said. “I’m not saying you should date him. I’m saying he’s a catch, and he’s in his fifties. Although maybe he has issues I don’t know about. I mean, he’s been single since Mary died ten years ago. You’d think one of the ladies in this town would have put a ring on that by now.”

Savina cleared her throat. “I’m sure he’s fine.”

“You ready to tell me why you and Hal are acting so weird around each other?” Harper asked.

“We’re not acting weird.”

“You’re totally acting weird. Is it a sexual tension thing?”

“No!” Savina stood up abruptly. “It’s not a sexual tension thing, Harper. He’s Alan’s best friend, and he would never do or say… look, there’s nothing weird between us. Drop it, okay?”

“Sure, I’m sorry,” Harper said. “I didn’t mean to upset you.”

“You haven’t,” Savina said.

She was lying, but Harper didn’t call her on it. She hated upsetting Savina as much as she hated upsetting Addie or her father.

“Do you want to stay for supper?” Savina said. “I’m thawing some homemade chilli.”

“Thank you, but” Harper checked her phone, “I have to run. I have a hair appointment to do something with this mess I currently call my hair. I’m trying out the new girl, Melinda, from Willington. She rents a chair at Curl Me Crazy, but Addie says she’s struggling to find clients because of the whole Willington thing.”

“I’ve seen her at the Walgreens a few times,” Saving said. “She has gorgeous red curly hair down to her butt. I’m surprised that alone doesn’t get her a few clients.”

“Well, hopefully, she can work miracles with my trainwreck of hair.” Harper stood and headed toward the door, smiling at Savina when she followed her. “I’ll text you a picture of my new hair later. I love you, Savina.”

“Love you too, honey.”

Chapter 10

“Oh my God, I love it, Harper!” Addison said the second she opened the door. “You look amazing!”

Harper followed Addison into the living room. “Do you really like it because I kind of freaking love it, and I’ll be super upset if you don’t.”

“Honey, it looks so good.” Addison stared intently at her head. “The pixie cut look works for you. Like, so much. And the pink,” she made a kissing motion against her fingers, “is the chef’s kiss. I could never pull off pink hair, but you make it effortless.”

“Thank you,” Harper said.

“Did you like Melinda?” Addison asked.

“I did. She’s nice and super talented.”

Preacher walked into the room, carrying a juice bottle in one hand and his tablet in the other. He stared at Harper. “Hey.”
