She laughed.“No, I guess not.”

“So, why do youlove Daniel?”

“Why does thatmatter?” she said.

He shrugged.“Just curious, I guess.”

“He’s a goodguy. He’s smart and funny and everyone loves him. He can comeacross as selfish and self-absorbed sometimes, but it’s not who hetruly is.”

“Isn’t it?”

She scowled.“No. He’s a firefighter for God’s sake. He risks his life every dayfor people he doesn’t even know. He makes a difference in his job.His job is important, and what he does matters. He’s not just outthere selling houses – or rather, trying to sell houses.”

“What you do isimportant too,” Connor said.

“Not in thesame way,” she said impatiently. “Why are you asking me this, anyway?”

“It just seemsstrange to me that you’re in love with him.”

“Why?” sheasked.

“You don’t seemlike the type of woman to be in love with a man like DanielMoore.”

Feeling vaguelyinsulted on Daniel’s behalf, she said, “Yeah, well you don’t knowme at all.”

“But Danieldoes?”

“Yes, he does,”she said. “I’ve known him since I was a kid. His sister is one ofmy best friends.”

“Knowingsomeone for a long time doesn’t mean they know who you are,” Connorsaid.

She folded herarms across her chest and glared at him, trying and failingmiserably not to look like a pouty little kid.

Connor glancedat his watch before standing. “That’s probably enough for tonight. It’s getting late.”

Kira stood.“It’s only ten after eight. That’s not that late.”

“It’s been abusy day,” he said.

“But Ithought…”

“You thoughtwhat?” he asked.

Despite being alittle pissed at him for his questions about Daniel, she said, “Wewould practice, uh, some more kissing.”

He didn’t sayanything and, mortified, Kira said, “Never mind. I’m being -”

“Tomorrowmorning.” His voice was a little terse. “I’ll come by ateight-thirty and we can… practice. If that works for you?”

“Um, yes, okay.That works.”

“Good.” He gaveher a brisk, almost business-like nod. “Thank you for the food.I’ll see you tomorrow morning.”

Chapter Four

“Just forpractice,” Kira whispered to her reflection. “It’s just forpractice and nothing more.”

Through theside window, she could see Connor parking on the street in front ofher house. A nest of butterflies woke in her stomach. She clenchedher thighs together and tugged her top away from her boobs beforeglancing at them. Shit, her nipples were hard and more thannoticeable.
