Fear.
“What about it?” Conor barked.
“The phone it called pinged in Midtown Manhattan…a block away from The Johnathan Group’s headquarters.”
Conor growled, popping up from his chair and pacing the room.
“You need to calm down,” Micah told him, too focused to do his usual coax and cajole. “This much emotion won’t get us anywhere.”
Conor whirled on him.
“I’m not emotional.”
“For you?” Luke said, trying for levity, even though his heart raced with the same fear he saw on Micah’s face. “This is like a full-on meltdown.”
Conor growled again. “Fine. I’m terrified. Aren’t you? We know who took her. We don’t know where she is, so how the hell do we get her back? And you’re joking right now?”
Luke started to stand, only to feel woozy. Damn it. He fell back into his chair.
“Fuck,” Conor said. “I’m sorry, Boy Scout.”
“It’s okay, Boss.”
Conor looked in his eyes without blinking, and Luke looked back—they were united in this. But would it last? Especially if—when—they got Kara back?
“So what do we do?” Luke finally said when the moment passed.
Before Micah could respond, there was a knock on the door.
“They’re still here?” Conor grumbled, but went to let them in.
Marcus leaned in the doorway, the Doctor towering behind him, a dark, silent shadow.
“I made my own calls. Managed to track down a…colleague who farmed out a contractor to fly the plane she was on. They know where she is. But it’s going to cost you.”
“Anything.”
“Name it.”
“Tell us now.”
Marcus smiled. “Damn, if this is what it’s like to love someone, I’m sticking to socialites and partners I can pay for sex. This shit is messy.”
Behind him, the Doctor grunted. Hard to tell if it was in agreement or disapproval, but Luke didn’t care.
“Marcus,” he warned.
“I’ll collect later. But my contact is calling in his marker now.”
“A hit.” Micah nodded, rising to his feet. “We’ll do it, we just need the when, where—and your plane.”
Luke began to stand, too, squaring his shoulders only to grimace from the pain.
“You aren’t going anywhere,” Conor told him.
“I’m the sniper here, aren’t I?” Luke shot back.
“How the hell are you going to shoot when your right arm is out of commission? I’m not losing you, too.”
