CHAPTER TEN
Saint was surprised at how easily he fell asleep with Marilisa in his arms. He wasn’t thinking about sex. Well, that’s not true. He was, but he could control the urges and desires because he knew this woman was worth waiting for.
Marilisa reminded him once that although she was a virgin, she wasn’t an innocent. It was foolish of him to have thought so. After all, she was a genius of the highest variety. In fact, a variety he couldn’t even put a name to.
Almost afraid to allow himself to go to sleep for fear of the nightmares beginning, he finally dozed off, holding her closely. Never having an issue with sleep, he was out quickly but woke when he felt her body jerk in his arms. Unwilling to release his hold on her, he whispered softly in her ear.
“It’s alright, Marilisa. I’ve got you. It’s Saint, I have you,” he said over and over again. For a while, it seemed to work. Then, without warning, she screamed as if someone were stabbing her. Her body jerked upright, breaking his hold on her.
“Baby, I need you to wake up,” pleaded Saint. The screams continued to pierce the night air, and he wondered how others weren’t hearing it as well. Maybe they were and knew exactly who and what it was.
Hearing someone at the front door, he almost panicked himself, then realized it would only be family.
“Saint? Saint, it’s me, son,” said Trevor.
“Come on back. Help me,” he said. Trevor walked in with Kane at his side.
“How did you know?” he frowned.
“I can feel it. With all of them. Lie next to her Saint, hold her hands in front of you, like you’re praying together. I have to use this technique with Aislinn, and it always works.”
“I’m not one of you,” he said, shaking his head.
“You’re her chosen soul mate, Saint. Just try it, son.” Saint nodded, forcing Marilisa to lie down again, enveloping her hands between his own. He touched his forehead to hers, whispering softly.
“It’s alright. You’re alright now. We’re here in our cottage, honey. Our cottage. We’re going to fix it up like you want, get married, and have babies. Lots of babies.” Continuing to soothe her, it seemed to be working when another visitor walked into the bedroom.
“Griffin? Why are you here?”
“I-I’m not sure. It was the most awful feeling ever. Like something was ripping me apart from the inside out, and then I heard her screams in my head.” Saint frowned at him, looking from Trevor to Kane.
“They weren’t paired, Saint. We know that for a fact,” said Kane.
“Then what the hell is going on here?”
“How bad was it?” whispered Marilisa. She was seated on the sofa, her knees clutched to her chest. Her mother, Ashley, and Saint’s mother, Alice, had come over to comfort her and make some coffee for them.
“I don’t think it was one of your worst,” said Ashley. “He handled it just fine. Your dad heard, and somehow, Kane felt it as well as Griffin.”
“I wish I knew why,” she said, shaking her head. “He’s not going to want to live with this.”
“Bullshit,” said Saint, walking toward her with coffee. He handed her the steaming cup, and she tried to smile at him. “I’m not leaving, honey. That doesn’t scare me. Besides, you haven’t lived through one of my nightmares yet.”
“I need to get ready for work,” she said, setting the coffee beside her.
“No one expects that, Marilisa,” said Alice. “Take some time and just relax.”
“No. I need to work. We’re working on some pretty important projects right now, and I won’t leave the team stranded. I’ll shower and change, and then we can all have breakfast.”
She disappeared, and Ashley raised her brows at Saint.
“She’s stubborn, honey, but she means well.”
“Her screams. Her screams were unlike anything I’ve ever heard. They were also, I don’t know, guttural. Deep. Almost like her voice changed.”
“I heard that as well,” said Kane. “Sorry.”
“Don’t be sorry, brother. I suspect you’re all here for a reason.”
