The couple turned about and rushed back toward the other buffet. I turned on Chui, wiping a hand down my face.
“Chui, what in the actual fuck was that?”’
“Um, sorry Miss Amy. You said to entice them.”
“You know what?” I said. “I’ve got a better idea. Stand there like a statue unless one of them speaks to you first. I’m going to go and sign up for the tournament.”
“Whatever you say, Miss Amy.”
I strode away from him, trying not to fume visibly. I passed by the buffet table set up by Acme Bread. So help me, it smelled bloody amazing. I wanted nothing more than to grab a plate and fill it with all of those goodies.
I forced myself to ignore the temptations and instead joined the line for sign-up. I was about four people from the end when I noticed a familiar face. Chad Maddox, the chocoholic himself. His pale, rounded form was clad in shorts and a polo shirt, and he wielded a racket. I realized then that he was going to play in the tournament.
What a huge opportunity. I looked up at the tournament brackets and realized the next people to sign up would be placed against Maddox and his partner, who I assumed was his wife as their name was Tiffany Maddox. Unfortunately, I would not be the next one to sign up.
Or would I?
“Oh. My. GOD.” I pointed in terror at the floor. “Is that a black widow spider?”
Man, I’ve never seen so many well-heeled people scramble in terror in my life. If I hadn’t been trying to play it straight, I would have fallen over laughing because it was epic. I approached the sign-up table, since there was no longer anyone in my way. The woman signing people up was crouched on top of the table, white as a sheet.
“You know, it turns out it was just an olive,” I said with a shrug. “So is this where you sign up for the tournament?”
The woman shot me a withering look, but she climbed off that table and signed me up. I wrote my name down on the line, but then I realized that I didn’t know Jonathon’s last name. I shrugged and just left his first name on the line. The woman in charge of the sign-up station didn’t complain, but to be honest she probably just wanted to get rid of me at that point. I know I would have.
But I succeeded. I looked up at the tournament brackets and saw Jon and myself squaring off against team Maddox. What a great opportunity to chat and make a good impression. Only… it occurred to me that Maddox was an older, hefty fellow, and might not be the stiffest competition.
I decided then and there that I would throw the match and let the Maddox team win. Dirty pool? Perhaps, but I was prepared to do anything to beat Acme Bread.
Outshine my buffet line, will they? Well, Acme Ace, you haven’t seen nothing yet!
Chapter Seven
Jonathon
Have you ever laid eyes on a woman and had that moment? You know the one I’m talking about. When your gaze sweeps over her, and something just kind of clicks?
That’s what happened when I laid eyes on Amelia for the first time. I hadn’t been able to get a good look at her while she was in her car, with her sunglasses on, but when she stepped out… I’m not ashamed to admit, my heart skipped a beat.
I’m not sure what got me so bad. I mean, yeah, she was beautiful, but I think it was the total package. She had thick, wavy dark hair down to her shoulders, a lithe but curvy build, and these eyes… hypnotic, like a gypsy temptress from a forgotten age. In fact, she was so gorgeous and so damn sexy it would have been ridiculous—if not for her smile.
Amelia’s knowing, impish smile humanized her in a way that made you almost forget how smoking hot she was. Her smile was simultaneously innocent and mischievous, almost like a housecat might make if it were a human.
And her personality… I’ve never been one of those people who could stand relentless optimism, but Amelia was… sunny. Yes, that’s a good word for it. She certainly brightened my world just by being around.
I watched her go as I stood waiting for one of the dog sitters to come and take Flash off my hands. Of course, I wouldn’t be able to leave right away. I just had to hope some of his doggie buddies were hanging out in the daycare to distract him.
Not that I minded having nothing better to do than wait and watch those glorious gams thrust out from under a flared white skirt. I pictured those legs wrapped around my waist while I drove my cock between her thighs and it gave me an instant hard-on right there.
Good thing my tennis shorts were a bit baggy in front. I handed the leash off to the dog sitter, and then waited while Flash sniffed butts until he found a playmate. Once I was sure he was off having fun, I exited the gate and headed for the clubhouse.
I set a quick pace, eager to be back in Amelia’s presence again. Then I forced myself to slow down. I wasn’t there trying to score some trim. I was at the country club to win that coveted corner lot. Location, location, location. It was all about location, and that corner lot would create a ton of value for investors. Greenwich Village? THE trendiest place to be in New York according to the current fashions? You bet I was excited.
The Tiger was salivating and wanted to pounce… only he was distracted. I couldn’t help being distracted by Amelia. I was going to get her number, come hell or high water. Unless…
I rubbed my mouth in dismay, slowing my pace to a halt. What if she were already taken? I hadn’t noticed a wedding ring, and I tend to pay attention to those kinds of things on a subconscious level. Hopefully, she didn’t have a boyfriend, but that hardly stopped me with Tisha.
I resolved that it wouldn’t stop me with Amelia. I was not a man into repeat performances. Mason sometimes joked and called me the ‘one-hitter quitter.’ As if he doesn’t change women as often as his underwear, but I digress.
