There’s a presence beyond this door. Massive. Looming.Dangerous.

Dr. Kelly sweeps an arm forward. “Dr. Evelyn Carter, meet Varkul, Warlord of Clan Blackfang!”

I step inside.

And freeze in place.

The biggest man I’ve ever seen turns to face me, only a thin glass wall separating me from him.

He istowering. Easily over eight feet of sheer, brutal muscle. His dark green skin is covered in elaborate tattoos, layered over countless scars. A thick, black beard frames a powerful jaw, and his long hair is bound into a single warrior’s braid.

But it’s his eyes that paralyze me.

Predatory. Feral. A deep, glowing gold, like a wolf’s in the dark. And they’re locked onto me.

There’s glass between us, but it feels like he’s right next to me.

My breath catches.

He sniffs the air.

A slow, wicked grin spreads across his face.

My body finally remembers how to move. I backpedal straight into Dr. Kelly.

“He’s an amazing specimen, isn’t he?” Dr. Kelly chuckles. “If any of these green bastards are still fertile, it’s got to be this one. I’m counting on you to get the best out of him, Evelyn.”

I swallow hard, my mouth suddenly dry. “Wait. You… you want me to workwithhim?”

I thought I’d be in a lab somewhere. Studying samples. Running tests. Not working directly with an eight-foot-tall, green-skinned warlord who looks like he could break me in half with one hand.

Dr. Kelly claps me on the back. “Oh yes. You’re going to be working with Varkul directly. I think he really needs ahuman touch.”

I stare at the beast, my breath lodged in my throat. I try to protest, but I can’t find the words.

Now I know why the pay was too good to be true…
