I huffed.

"I think you should start with chocolates since she likes food," Gigi said thoughtfully.

"Right, and then flowers," Tilda said, pulling more of Asano's hair into her hands.

"Yes," Gigi agreed. "Maybe some dates at nice restaurants."

"Excellent thought." Rayth put his hands in his pockets. "I feel more confident now."

Tilda tapped Asano's shoulder. "Where's your alpha?"

My stomach sank. Here we go.

Asano pointed at Rayth. "The old alpha right there. He did in fact work his way up to expensive clothes and nice houses, I'm pleased to report."

Tilda frowned. "You're an omega."

Gigi looked at me. "You can't have two omegas in a pack."

"Says who?" Asano crossed his arms over his chest. He still sounded playful, but there was an edge to his voice.

My stomach curled in on itself. I wanted this day to be light and fun, not being grilled on my relationship by little girls.

"Everyone." Gigi pushed her braids off her shoulders. "An omega forms a bond with her alphas. Sometimes betas."

"Which is how it can work," I added. "But not always how it's done."

Gigi glanced at Nikki. "So then...you're the other alpha?"

His face went red, and he looked like a deer caught in the headlights. "Yes. I brought her books and help her with her magic."

"Okay," Gigi said, like the matter was final.

She loved reading, so Nikki had an in there.

"That's it?" Rayth said to her with a laugh. “I get the third degree, but Nikki gets a pass with books and magic?”

"Yes," Gigi shrugged. "The two of you can figure out what your omegas..." She paused and looked at Asano. "Need."

"Yeah," Asano looked at Nikki. "We are just omegas, after all, and need alphas."

"Saints, Asano is going to be insufferable after this," Nikki muttered.

Priestess Tilbelda shuffled over. "That's enough of that." She shot me a look before pasting a smile on her face. "Let's continue our tour down to the sending circle. There are some runes used by the ancients to promote the flow of magic."

The group walked around the temple and down the side of a small hill. It was windy, the long grasses blowing in a dance.

Priestess Tibelda stopped short just as we reached a series of low walls. Most of them weren't higher than my hip, but some were taller than Rayth. They stood in a vague circle, but a few of the walls had fallen over and lay nearly covered by moss.

"What are you doing here?" Tibelda frowned.

I closed the distance between us, winding through the other novices until I saw whom Tibelda was frowning at.

Men. Four men, one crouching over a stone with a chisel. Dug into the one of the walls were fresh runes.

The men wore leather tunics over coarse pants. They did not look remotely like they belonged in the Royal Army.

The man standing closest to us matched Tibelda's scowl. His hair was ridiculous, blond and puffy, like he was about to go to a gala. "Madam, this site is closed for renovations."
