The Hunt
After I realized Alexis and I wouldn’t be able to come to a compromise I let her be. I wanted to chase her, but I also didn’t want her to feel smothered. At one point during the day, I went to her room. I was on the verge of knocking on the door when I stopped myself. If I placed myself in her shoes, she had a reason to be upset, which was the reason I apologized for my lack of communication. This version of our relationship was new to both of us so there were things we still needed to learn about each other.
I didn’t see her for the rest of the day. Around ten last night I decided to go to bed. I experienced some pain in my shoulder, so I took a painkiller. When Alexis decided to speak to me again, I would talk to her about an alternative to these pain meds. There had to be another way for me to ease the pain while my shoulder healed.
When I woke up the next morning, I didn’t smell anything cooking but I figured she was still holed up in her room. A series of loud knocks at my front door jolted me out of bed. There were only two people that could get through my gate, and that was Abel and Uncle Will. If either of them was here unannounced something had to be wrong. Out of habit I grabbed the gun I kept in my nightstand as I made my way downstairs. I opened the door and Abel busted inside the crib.
“Where is Alexis? I have been calling you guys since yesterday. Neither of you called me back. Is everything okay?” he snapped.
“We’re good. I just woke up. Alexis must still be in her room. Let me go get her,” I said. I turned toward the stairs and made my way to Alexis’s bedroom door. After a series of knocks without her answering, I turned the knob to find the bed made like she didn’t sleep in it. By this time Abel stood inside her room with me.
“Wolf, what the hell is going on? Where is my sister?”
“She may be in the guest house. We got into an argument yesterday. She isn’t feeling me right now,” I explained.
“Okay, but that can’t be the reason she isn’t answering my calls. What did y’all argue about?”
I hesitated a bit. It was either now or never to tell him about Alexis and I being together.
“Listen, I don’t know how to tell you this. Alexis and I are dating. Don’t be upset. I know you never wanted any of your friends dating your sister, but this is different—” I wasn’t able to finish my sentence before Abel punched me in the face.
“I asked you to look after her not fuck with her. You and Alexis aren’t together. There is no way my best friend would betray my trust by fucking my little sister!” he yelled.
If this was anyone other than Abel, we would have been tussling in the middle of this living room. Before I could say anything to him his phone rang. I couldn’t hear what the caller said but I recognized he was angry as the muscles in his jaw flinched. He hung up the phone and screamed, “Fuck!” Abel punched the air he was so upset. “Them First Street niggas have Alexis. That was Oz. He wants half a million or he’s going to kill her. We have two hours to meet up with him. He is going to text me the address,” he explained.
I shook my head in disbelief.
“How the fuck did this happen? I thought you said you would keep her safe. Protect her with your life… that’s what you said!” Abel shouted.
“I never heard her leave. We argued but I didn’t think she would leave. We’re going to get her back and then we will kill the niggas that took her. You know I would never let anything happen to her.”
“We have to get her back. There is no way around it,” he said.
“Let me grab my guns so we can head over to the club. We can take one of the Mustangs,” I said as I headed to my room to grab my twin Rugers. They were my favorite guns out of my collection. Once I was ready, we walked into the garage, and I noticed one of my Range Rovers was missing.
“Alexis must have driven back to her house last night after I fell asleep. This whole time I thought she was in her room mad at me, and she’d been kidnapped. I fucked up big time,” I stated.
“I’m pissed at you, but we will deal with that shit when we get Alexis back. Let me call Will so he knows what’s going on. These niggas don’t even know they just signed their own death sentence,” Abel declared.
I nodded in agreement with every word he said. The speed limit didn’t matter to me as I pushed the hemi on the mustang to get to the club. I swerved in and out of lanes on the highway trying to get to the rest of the crew as fast as I could. Even with my crazy driving it still took us forty minutes to pull up to the club. Once we reached the gate, we saw our brothers lined up and waiting for us. Abel and I exited the car and walked over to Uncle Will and Tone.
“Abel, nephew, I called over to some of our chapter clubs. The brothers are suiting up to meet us wherever to lend their support. We’re ready to ride when y’all say the word,” Uncle Will assured us.
“Here’s the address he sent me. I know some of the dudes from the other clubs are snipers. Maybe they could set up before we get there. We want them to think it’s just a few of us pulling up. You, Tone, Wolf, and I could leave together,” Abel instructed Uncle Will.
“And what about the money?” Tone asked.
“We can grab some duffel bags and put paper on the bottom and stacks of bills on the top. They aren’t walking out of there alive. We just need to distract them while we get Alexis out of there,” I dictated.
I walked into the clubhouse to grab the two duffel bags I kept in my locker here. Although I wasn’t an active member, I still kept clothes and items to shower with here. One of the bags held stuff for me to shower while the other held my clothes. After I emptied the bags, I went into the office to grab some packs of printer paper. I picked up the bags to feel how heavy they were. They just needed to have some weight to them. We weren’t dealing with dudes that knew what half a million felt like. At this point I just needed to create an illusion.
My sling was back at the house, so I had to deal with the stiffness of my shoulder. I tried not to move it too much, so I moved the bags one at a time. I started to sweat as I moved faster so we could stay on schedule. One of the rooms in the back held our safe. I opened the safe then grabbed enough stacks to cover the paper in the duffel bag.
My adrenaline pumped as I calculated every move I made. After I closed up the safe, I took the first bag outside and dropped it by Abel’s feet. I went back for the second bag then headed back to the car to load it in. Abel dropped the bag he had in as well and we both got in the car.
Uncle Will and Tone rode behind the car on their bikes as we made our way to the address Oz gave me. My heart raced in anticipation as the time on the clock neared the designated pick-up time. I could have kicked myself for giving her space. When I got her back, I would make it clear that space was not a thing in this relationship.
I knew she was upset but not to the point where she would risk her safety and leave the house. There had to be something deeper she didn’t tell me about. Once I was sure she was safe and settled, I intended to find out what it was. Thinking of Alexis reminded me that Abel never told me the full story of what happened between him and the First Street Crew.
