CHAPTER ONE

PEYTON

“Mom!” I call out as I stand on the landing at the base of the stairs with water lapping at my ankles. I look around and balk at the sight of the entire downstairs being flooded.

“What’s wrong?” she calls back.

I scrunch my face and debate how to respond until I feel a searing heat against my back and gasp. I fight back a shiver at the contact. Hudson has grown bolder since I arrived here two weeks ago.

“I wonder if I could get you to squirt?” I suck in a sharp intake of breath. Hudson is my stepbrother and his comments should make me feel sick, but they don’t. I feel a pool of heat brewing low in my belly and try to fight against the sensation.

“Oh, my goodness!” I jolt at the sound of my mom’s voice and take a step forward, putting some much needed distance between Hudson and me. I look up at my mom and feel horrible when tears shine in her blue eyes. “Oh lord, how the heck did this happen?” she breathes out as she descends the stairs and passes by me and Hudson.

“I’ll turn the water main off, " he says. The moment he disappears, I release my breath as my lungs start to burn. I follow after my mom and take in the damage. Just as we nearthe living room, the floor above caves in. We both scream and scramble out of the way, just as the bathtub from upstairs falls through the ceiling, water gushing everywhere.

I reach for my mom, only to slip and fall, soaking myself from head to toe. The water shuts off a second later, and I sigh in relief. I push to my feet, wanting to curse, but I know my mom will lose her shit. Ever since she found God after meeting Ken, she has changed.

She goes to church every Sunday and spends her free time helping the community. My dad is in the army and was just relocated, so I had to either move to some random country with him, or move in with my mom and stepdad. What I didn't know at the time when I agreed to move here, was that Ken’s son would be living here while his apartment was being renovated.

“Oh, Peyton, what are we going to do?” Mom cries as I push to my feet and stare down at my clothes. I cringe at the sight of my white shirt, which is now translucent, and my pink bra shining through like a neon light. “Ken and I can’t afford to repair the damage.”

“Mom, that’s why you have insurance,” I supply.

She shakes her head and turns to face me, tears cascading down her pale cheeks. “Insurance won’t cover this.”

I reel back. “Why the hell not?”

Her features tighten. “Language!” I fight back my eye roll and mutter an apology. “They warned us to get the pipes fixed, but we couldn’t afford it. Ken has picked up extra shifts at the mill, and I’ve covered a few of the girls at the diner, but we just…” When her bottom lip begins to tremble, I pull her to me and hug her as she cries. I spot Hudson entering the room over her shoulder. My eyes widen when I notice he’s not alone.

The guys with him are just as orgasm inducing as he is. Hudson is hot as sin, with shaggy brown hair that constantly flops onto his forehead and green eyes that sear into you withintensity. The guys that flank him on either side are fucking sinister. They are both shirtless and look like they just rolled out of bed. The one on the left has the body of a gym junkie, his muscles are defined and ripple like a wave, his black hair is cropped short on the top and shaved on the sides, and his brown eyes draw you in like quicksand. But the one on his other side has tattoos across his chest and full sleeves down both arms. His black hair is long enough for you to run your fingers through and tug on the strands. But those eyes, God they are the brightest blue I have ever seen. The sight of Rosary beads around his neck has my brows bunching.

Hudson smirks as if he knows where my thoughts have gone. I blush and pull back from Mom, flicking my gaze over her shoulder. She whirls around and gasps. “Oh, Father,” Mom weeps and rushes toward the tattooed bad boy. He wraps his arms around her, and she begins blabbering on about what happened while I stand here with wide eyes and my mouth ajar. Hudson chuckles and stalks toward me, with the other guy following him.

“Peyton, meet Kye, our neighbor.”

I splutter. “You’re our neighbor?” I squeak out, then shoot Hudson a glare when he laughs. Kye smiles, and fuck me if it doesn’t do things to my insides.

“Yeah, nice to meet you, " he rasps out. Before I can respond, the tattoo stranger snags my attention when he speaks.

“We’ll organize a fundraiser. The church will do what it can to help your family, Lenior.” I snap my gaze to Hudson in question. The asshole just grins and bends down until his lips brush against my ear, sending a shiver down my spine.

“I told you to come to church on Sunday,” he whispers.

“Why?” I ask breathlessly.

“Meet our Priest, Father Pierce.” My eyes widen to the size of dinner plates as I gawk at the priest. His gaze is locked onto mine as my mother continues to spew her problems.

How the hell can this guy be a priest when he oozes devilish vibes?

“Peyton!” My mother snaps as she whirls around, scowling at me. I scrunch my face in confusion.

I suck in a sharp breath when Kye brushes up against my side and says low enough for only me to hear. “You said that out loud, Bunny.”

Shame washes over me. I feel heat staining my cheeks. “Sorry, Father,” I mutter and cringe when the priest smirks at me.

“Don’t be. You won’t be the first to assume that, and I’m sure you won’t be the last. And please, call me Van.” If I could get away with face-palming myself without being seen, I would do it.

“What are we going to do?” Mom chokes out.
