CHAPTER 12 – Chloe
“Why are Sarah and Axelhere?” I bent down to pet what looked like a dog, but as soon as the thing growled at me I yanked my hand away.
Rylee looked over at me in surprise, “Axel is one of Zeron’s best warriors if not the best; don’t tell Zack I said that. He has been helping to fight the Stavainians. Well recently, they were fighting the Seronians.”
“Seronians?” I was totally confused. “Don’t we live on Zeron?”
Rylee rolled her eyes. “Yeah, obviously a man named them.”
I really was starting the like Rylee. She had a wicked sense of humor and was really bright. I also liked the way that she didn’t take any shit from Zack. We had spent about an hour wandering through the city and she bought a few things. I saw some clips I liked for my hair and she bought them as well.
I tried to tell Rylee that I really didn’t need them, but she threatened to set her mother on me and I wasn’t sure I could take any more mothering at the moment.
Betty was one incredible lady, but I needed a little space to think about things.
“Who are the Stavainians?” I asked, holding up some fabric that was indeed as soft as it looked.
“They are a race that feels they are superior to all others. Their main goal is to destroy all living things. That is why Earth agreed to the SUPER program that you and Zack are a part of.”
“What do you mean that Earth agreed? There are billions of people who live there. What country or entity?”
Rylee shrugged, “I dunno, whoever they sent to The Intergalactic Council. They wanted to imprint the strongest warriors, which is Zeronian army, with those that would enhance and hopefully gain powers of their own. Earth wasn’t the first planet that they tried, but it was the only one that the subjects were taken before their demise. Earth is really one of the last places that think they are the only ones out there. A bit self-absorbed if you ask me.”
I chucked, “There are many people are on earth that fit that description, but there are good people too.”
It actually felt strange to say that. I had been in such a funk that I hadn’t thought about the kindnesses that had been shown to me.
“If you say so,” Rylee clearly didn’t believe me.
“Alright, well for example, when I was in school my parents both worked in the medical field.”
She nodded, “Well, that makes sense that they were healers if you are one as well.”
I shook my head, “No, they didn’t heal people the same way I do. They went to school and learned medicines and procedures. I just stick my hands on people and let the voodoo power inside of me do the work.”
She shrugged, “Either way people get better, right?”
A smirk settled on my face, “I suppose so, but you are making me lose sight of what I was saying. So, when I was in school sometimes my Dad or Mom would be late picking me up, and I would be sent down to the office to wait. Mrs. Nelson worked in the office as the school secretary. Every time I came in she would get the biggest grin on her face and ask if I would please come and visit with her a few moments because she had been dying to talk to me. She always made me feel special and often had a snack in her purse for me to eat.”
It’s funny, I hadn’t thought of Mrs. Nelson in a long time. But the kind older woman had been a major influence in my life and it’s strange because it didn’t take a whole lot from her to make a huge impact on me. That was something I needed to think about.
Rylee grinned, “She sounds amazing. What happened to her?”
“I don’t know?” I answered honestly. “But when I was sick, and it was really cold I would try to find a spot at the shelter. They were very overcrowded and often you were sent away. But there was one night that I was barely holding on, and a man saw them turning me away, he stopped the lady and gave me his bed.”
Rylee’s face softened, “That is very kind. And he had to go back into the cold?”
“I don’t remember, as soon as my head hit the pillow on the cot I was out. I hope that they found him something or at least let him sleep inside. The point that I am trying to make is that there are good people everywhere, even earth.”
She linked her arm in mine, “Look at you, being so positive!”
I grumbled at her and she laughed.
“No, Chloe, I am serious. You are so much more approachable than those first few weeks.”
I grimaced, “Yeah, I am sorry about that. This was all so strange, and I thought...”
I broke off embarrassed by my thoughts. I had awakened and thought I was in hell.
