I narrow my eyes at Drew and Adam.
“Someone does need to stay with her,” Adam agrees.
“Perfect, it’ll be me.” I nod.
“No, I think it should be me,” Drew volunteers.
“Why?” I snap.
“Because Adam has classes covered, and you need to train.” I see the subtle smirk on his face. He knows exactly what he’s doing.
“That actually would make the most sense,” Adam says easily.
Max comes out from the bedroom, wearing one of my T-shirts and sweatpants that are way too big on her. I’m not even sure how she has them staying up on her hips. But seeing her inmy clothes makes me feral. I’m about to take her right here, right now.
“Which one of your motorcycles can I steal?” She smiles widely at me and I shake my head, remembering the night she showed up threatening to do just that. Though, the darkness that lingers over that memory is strong seeing as that was the beginning of the end before she was taken from us.
“You want to go to The Tavern and talk to George?” Drew clarifies.
Max nods in his direction.
“I’ll take you. These two have things to do today.” He gives me a sideways glance and I clench my fist.
“Sounds good, see you guys later.” She walks to the front door, and I don’t question the fact that she’ll be trying to get her job back wearing clothes that are five times too big for her. If George denies her, it doesn’t matter to us.
Drew follows after her without even looking back at us. Once they’re outside I turn to Adam. “We will spar one time and if I win then you don’t give me shit about skipping training.”
He scoffs, “We’ll see about that.”
Adam hasme spar with Cal because I think he’s worried about fighting me. It would be embarrassing to lose as the coach. Of course, I win the impromptu fight with Cal easily. Afterwards, I check my phone afterwards to make sure Drew hasn’t said anything.
What I find is much worse and makes me feel like I’m going to need to get into the cage again. Or at least hit the bag for a bit.
There’s a text from my dad, demanding that I call him. It’s the last thing I want to do, but when I also see the one from my brother that has a screenshot of the news reporting Carson’s death, I know there’s going to be a problem.
I look up the news article myself to make sure Max isn’t mentioned. When I see that all it says is that the investigation is ongoing, I breathe out a small sigh of relief. They won’t find anything that leads the murder back to her, but unfortunately my family knows something is up.
“Fuck,” I mumble to myself.
I dial my dad, pressing the phone to my ear, already irritated.
“Don’t say anything other than yes or no,” he says immediately and I know what he’s asking without him saying it.Did I do it?
I don’t say anything.
“Goddammit, Caine,” he grumbles. “We aren’t talking about this on the phone. Come home.”
“No,” I state firmly.
“If you don’t, then I’m coming there.”
“Don’t bother.”
“I’m not getting you out of fucking prison if you end up caught.”
“Good.” I hang up; I don’t want his help anyway. No matter what happens, we’re going to figure it out.
