Grey chuckled. “Oh, trust me, Ms. Thompson, I know I will. It’s going to be quite the spectacle.”
She rolled her eyes out of frustration. “It’sDoctorThompson.” She knew the spat-out words were trite, but at this moment, it seemed like one last little act of defiance against Grey. One she’d cling to as long as she could.
“Onto the plane.”
They headed for the jet. It was sleek and she could just barely glimpse into the posh interior. She marched toward it, not even trying to keep up with Grey’s insistent long strides as she dragged her feet. She climbed the steps one by one, wishing for a way out. If wishes were horses…she could ride away.
The jet was decked out in black leather. If ever she seen a vampire den, it was this place. The curtains were black and red. He pushed her down into a seat. He took the one across from her.
Tabitha and a couple of other vampires spread out amongst the other seats. It didn’t take long for the engines to rev up, the pilot came over the loudspeaker to let them know they were getting ready for departure.
“I can hear your pulse rising every second. It’s like a drug just listening to it,” Grey said above the engines.
She clutched the armrests. It was happening. She was going to leave Chicago on a vampire plane and then she would be gone. She’d be fully at Grey’s mercy.
Well, not fully. As long as she could keep Henrik’s heartstone hidden.
The jet’s engines grew louder and roared with building momentum. Quinn squeezed her eyes shut. Down the runway, the jet sped.
“No. No. No. No.” She hadn’t even realized she was saying anything until she heard Grey laugh at her expense again.
The jet left the runway and lifted into the air. She turned her gaze toward the window. Chicago was already getting further and further away.
The jet gained speed and altitude and Quinn went limp in her seat. Defeated. Devastated. Destroyed.
“Look on the bright side, love. There are still plenty of exciting things you’ll see before you finally die.”
Quinn kept her gaze on the window. That was when she saw it. There was no way it was real. There wasn’t a green dragon aimed right for them. She gaped at it as it came barreling right for them. She wasn’t going to give one hint that something was coming until there would be no way to avoid it.
Quinn lifted her head and met his gaze and slow smile curving her lips. “You’re right about that.”
The dragon collided with the jet. Before Grey could even react, the door was ripped off the side of the jet. The entire plane broke into chaos. It was a wind tunnel trying to suck everyone out through the now open doorway.
Quinn didn’t dare move. She hadn’t been granted super strength like the other women. At least, not that she was aware of. Grey’s bite didn’t seem to have any effect on her. She didn’t care why it didn’t work; she was just grateful something blew up in Grey’s face.
The jet was losing altitude. Quinn glanced up to see Grey getting out of his seat.
“Grey.” The single snarl from behind her made her jump with joy inside. She looked over her shoulder and saw Henrik standing completely naked on the jet behind her.
Only, he didn’t quite look like himself.
His eyes were black, and he looked damn near feral. His fingers were claws, his teeth still sharp with a dragon’s bite. What happened to him?
Grey stood in the aisle glaring at him. Henrik leapt and the two of them collided like a freight train hitting a wall. The jet wobbled.
The plane was probably crashing while the titans onboard were fighting and throwing their weight back and forth. Quinn was probably going to die regardless of what happened at this point.
“Quinn?”
She turned to find Levi coming right for her.
“Levi. What happened to Henrik?”
Levi knelt next to her. “There’s no time to explain. I have to get you off this thing.”
“What about Henrik?”
Levi’s deep, soulful eyes burned into hers. “If I save you, I can save him.”
