“I just did. Now, back to business. I can’t control you, but that’s all right. There is plenty of time to get the heartstone off you. Until then, I’ll just use thrall.”

Quinn squeezed her eyes shut. “Just leave me here. You’ve won. You’ve got the start of your army. You sent someone to kill my dragon. What else do you need?”

“Everything, Ms. Thompson.”

Primal Assault

As Quinn was ushered out to a car, her whole body ached and itched like it was on fire or like she was burning from the inside out. Her vision blurred. Even her hearing seemed to be cutting in and out.

She writhed in the back of the limo while Grey conducted his business and Tabitha played on her phone. Quinn had never felt more alone than she did at that particular moment. Even Drake seemed indifferent to her presence.

A woman who looked like her had been sent to kill Henrik. Even if he lived through it, it would be too late to save her. There was no way to tell where Grey was hauling her and the rest of the superpowered women.

Quinn didn’t bother wasting her air to beg for her life or to be set free. She needed to figure out a way to be clever, to escape. It all overwhelmed her. How was she supposed to save anyone? She couldn’t even save herself.

Despair settled into the very fiber of her being.

As the pain and burning eased, she lifted herself into a seated position and glanced out the window. They were in an unfamiliar part of Chicago. They were headed out of town.

“Where are we going?” she muttered.

“Far from here. Stefano is going to clean up the mess here and then we’ll be onto the next thing,” Grey said.

She hadn’t meant to say anything out loud.

“You’re feeling better?”

“I don’t really know. What is better?”

“You’re letting your emotions get the better of you. If you relax, it’ll happen.”

“I don’t want it to happen. Unless I can just burn you alive right here and right now.”

“You think I don’t have precautions against that? I may not be able to control your every move with Dragon Fire, but thrall gives me enough power over you that at least I know you can’t aim your fire breathing at me, if you’re ever able to do it. You human dragon mates certainly have thrown a wrench in my plans.”

“So glad to resist you,” she spat.

He gave her an annoyed look. “It’ll be short lived. I plan to strip you of every article of clothing to find out where your precious little heartstone is. Once I’ve ripped it from your body, you’ll be all mine to do with as I please.”

“As pleasant as that sounds, if your assassin is going to kill off Henrik any moment, what good am I to you?”

Grey chuckled. “You think Henrik is the only person who cares about you in this world? You forget that I had James in my custody for weeks. We already knew you were important to him. I still owe him a painfully drawn out death. You stole that from me.”

“I thought you wanted me to escape. That’s how you got your precious fire stone thingy.”

“You weren’t supposed to escape. If I’d known you had that stupid potion on you, I would’ve made sure to rid you of it first. But all’s well that ends well. When James comes for you, I’ll be ready.”

Quinn rolled her eyes and turned her gaze back out the window. She’d forgotten there was a private airport just outside the city. Now she was getting an up close and personal view of it. He was going to fly them out of here. If she left American soil she’d really be in danger without an ounce of help.

There had to be some way out of this situation.

The limo driver parked the car and Grey got out of the vehicle, waiting by the door. When she climbed out, his hand clamped down onto her shoulder. “Do exactly as I say, or you will not like the consequences.”

Quinn wasn’t stupid enough to do anything just yet. She knew there would only be hell to pay. But she couldn’t just let him win.

“Someday, it might not be me, but someday, you’re going to get exactly what you’ve got coming to you.”
