She glared at him. “I think you need to sleep out here.”

Henrik growled.

She growled back at him. “I’m the kidnapped woman in this situation and I get to make the sleeping arrangements. You stay out here. I’ll be fine in the bedroom. No one is going to try and hurt me in there.”

Henrik gave her a curt nod.

“Good. I’m glad we understand each other.” She stormed into the bedroom and slammed the door behind her. She kept on her socks, jeans, and tank top, ditching the bra for comfort. If they were attacked in the middle of the night, at least she’d be mostly dressed.

The damn dragonhadn’t listened.

She woke up with Henrik wrapped around her. At least she was warm and snuggly. Maybe even a little too warm.

She rolled out of his grip and turned around. She found a pair of human green eyes looking back at her when she managed to push her hair out of her face.

Henrik blinked a few times and then sat up like a spring. “What the fuck are we doing here?”

“You don’t remember?”

Henrik glanced back at her and then he scooted off the bed and charged out into the other room. He appeared back in the doorway of the bedroom a minute later. “What happened?”

Quinn rolled onto her back and stared at the ceiling. “This is really confusing. I wanted you to tell me what happened.”

Henrik sighed. “I lost control of my dragon last night. He brought you to our sanctuary. Are you okay?”

“I’m fine. A little annoyed. Your dragon is sort of a bossy crank. I don’t think he thinks much of you right now.”

“Yeah, he’s been unusually unruly lately.”

“He doesn’t like that your mate is in danger all the time, does he?”

Henrik frowned. “My…mate?”

“That’s what he called me last night, several times. He thinks I have your heartstone on me.”

Henrik blinked at her a couple of times. “Do you?”

“I don’t know. How would I know if it was your heartstone?”

Henrik took a step into the room. “You’re not wearing any jewelry, not even earrings.”

“No, I usually don’t because of being a vet. I just end up having to take it off all the time. But there is something I’m almost always wearing.”

Henrik cocked an eyebrow.

“Nipple rings.”

Henrik’s eyes widened a little, the pupils dilating. His nostrils flared and he licked his lips.

“See the thing is, I bought this particular set at a thrift store that had magical items in it. James took me. I found this ring with a beautiful purple stone in it. When I got home, I put it in my jewelry case. Then one night I decided I wanted to change out my normal barbells for something a little more fun. For some reason I picked up the ring and it changed shape right before my eyes. I didn’t even think about it. I figured it was just magical. I didn’t even bother to ask James about it. I thought it was cool, plus it turned into these super cute nipple rings. I put them in, and I’ve been wearing them ever since.”

Henrik had moved to the side of the bed and wasn’t far from her now.

“I’m not going to show you,” she said, her voice trembled a little.

“Why not?”
