“Humans and dragons used to stand together. Maybe that time has come again,” Ash said.
“You can’t be serious,” the Turquoise king said.
“I’m dead serious.”
“You’re not even king yet,” the Lapis Lazuli king replied.
“I have a mate, and later her and I will be given our full titles.”
Marcus scoffed, “The human?”
“She’s not human.”
Gavin and Ryker both stiffened. Ah, so they did know. He wouldn’t out their mates for the time being, even if it would make his intentions easier for the other kings to bear.
“Tell me, Marcus, you’re one of the eldest here, what do you remember of the obsidian clan?”
Marcus’s eyes grew cold. His jaw tightened, and he lifted his chin in defiance. “They’re extinct, what does it matter?”
“I found some old books in the king’s library in Brazil when I back there recently. I didn’t find a lot of information. I did discover that the entire Obsidian Clan was female.”
Marcus raised an accusing finger. “You don’t know what you’re talking about. This is complete bullshit.”
The Amazonite king stepped forward, eyeing Marcus suspiciously. “Speak plainly, Asher.”
“I think the Obsidian dragons were human mates.”
This stunned everyone into silence.
Marcus shook his head. “Mating with humans is against the law. If you’ve claimed your human, they not only should you be arrested, so should your slut of a human.”
Ash snarled and jerked forward.
Henrik and Gavin grabbed him, holding him back.
“I don’t have to stand around here for this. And none of you should listen to this propaganda. It’s ludicrous. Humans for mates. It’s disgusting.”
“We shouldn’t separate over something so unimportant. Mates are given to us by fate. If you don’t want one, then don’t take one, but no one should have to go without just because she is human. Now is the time for us to join forces, Marcus, not separate. Grey wants us all dead.”
Marcus shook his head. “I don’t care.” He stormed out of the house.
The Turquoise king, the Garnet king, and the Lapis Lazuli king all left with Marcus.
“Way to divide and conquer,” Gavin said.
Ash sighed. “I stupidly thought that would go better.”
Gavin shook his head. “Brandon won’t allow human mates, because then he would have to relinquish his thrown back to me. That’s why he left.”
“Grey wants division among the dragons. It will only help his cause,” Ash muttered.
The Amazonite king stepped forward. “Did your mate really turn into an obsidian dragon?”
“She’s upstairs if you want a demonstration.”
“Not necessary. I trust you, Ash. I’ve always trusted you. Your parents were good people and great rulers. They would be proud of you now.”
“I don’t know about that. But thank you.”
