Chance didn’t look sad, in fact, he looked a little relieved. “Who took over?”
“I will be. The meeting is tonight.”
He was quiet, which unnerved me. Did he know more than I thought?
“Tannis?”
“Dead.”
“You don’t waste time, do you?” he smiled, showing me his true side. He was as malicious as my father was, and I think that was why he was so scared of him.
“I didn’t say it was me.”
“You didn’t say it wasn’t.”
Check and mate.
“I am going to take the seat and revolutionise the business. I have Jett on my side.”
Chance’s eyebrows shot up briefly. “Who else?”
“Lennon.”
He smiled again. “Of course. Who else? You need more than a couple.”
“I need you to have my back too. You’re the only one I trust.”
“Hendrix?”
“Can’t be counted on.”
He nodded. “That kid got it rough, but probably not as rough as you, hey sis?”
“Let’s not talk about that.”
Chance rubbed his bald head and rested his elbows on his knees. “It won’t be easy.”
“I have a plan. Just sit tight and I’ll have you out in the next week.”
Chance nodded. “Sure. I’m glad you’re back, I missed your smile.”
“Well, I don’t smile often so don’t get used to it.”
“Keep your eyes open, sis.”
I nodded and hugged him quickly. It felt oddly comforting to be able to hug him and not feel like I was going to be laughed at by my father for being too girly.
The guard took him back to his cell and I turned to leave, the warden coming too. Hadrian escorted me out of the building before another fight ensued and we headed back to the chateau. I needed to get changed. When Hadrian took the corner at a tight angle, one file flipped open and I bent to close it only to bring it up onto my lap when I saw a photo of Sonora.
She looked to be meeting a mob boss I knew to be extremely dangerous and was now dead. Why would she be meeting with him? She didn’t want the mafia lifestyle, she wanted freedom and that’s why she divorced Gideon.
Or so she told me.
I opened her file and started to read the notes. By the time Hadrian pulled up to the house, I felt my entire body go cold. Sonora had been playing us this entire time, she was my enemy, and a dangerous one at that…only thing was…she didn’t know I knew.
I needed to watch my back here.
“Heads up, Presley.”
